Buying first rifle - the process

I have bought and sold a lot of shotguns over the last 20 years, pretty simple process, but I have read the rules have changed.
I have not bought / sold anything in the last few years.
Given its likely my first s.1 purchase will be from someone far away I am looking at RFD to RFD.
What is the actual process and what time scale and costs should I be working on?
Thanks!

Read the "Distance Sales" stickie in the general discussion forum.
All is explained and discussed at great length.
Cost will specific to those involved and can and will vary.

I have read that and its a bit of a soup sandwich TBH.
Reading that post is what prompted me to post this thread as by the 3rd page I was totally confused to say the least.
I am just looking for a simple explanation if possible?

Try working back from the last page and look for the BASC link, there is no need for this thread to become a repeat of the original.

Regarding the simple explanation it is in post number 1 in the "Distance Sales" Stickie.

Well its not simple to me. Having read all 9 pages now there are still questions being asked on page 9 so I don't think its clear.
All I want to know is what do I do.
I assume:
I agree to buy firearm off Mr X.
I post my FAC to him and THEN send payment.
Mr X then writes the firearm details on the FAC.
Mr X then takes my FAC and firearm to his RFD.
His RFD then send the FAC and the firearm to my RFD
I then go to my RFD and collect the package.
Is that right? I assume that you have to send the FAC?
As I said I have read all 9 pages and not seen any full explanation.
The good practice guide does not explain either, there is one flow chart but it does not detail exactly what to do.

Near enough.
Obviously the seller cannot sell you the firearm 'till they have proof you are entitled to purchase one, so they must see your FAC with appropriate permissions before accepting money.
Having sold the gun they then enter it onto your FAC, which they can either return to you directly or with the firearm.
It then goes as you describe, seems like you managed to work it out from the thread OK.

as a first gun, does buying a new one help make things easier?

No it is the location of the firearm and how you intend to receive, regardless of its provenance.
Buying a new gun is like buying a new car, for people with more money than sense.
