The club I shoot at have a number of black powder revolver shooter but no single shot pistol shooter I can ask so I have to ask what might seem a simple question on the forum.
On the internet I have seen people using a funnel when loading single shot black powder pistols. the funnel has a small mouth and a long tube that reaches the bottom of the barrel. I realise this ensures the powder is located at the bottom of the barrel, is this done to stop grains of powder snagging on fouling or is there another reason?
When my variation comes through I plan to buy a under hammer black powder pistol will I need a funnel to accurately charge this type of pistol?

After 40+ years of shooting single shot pistols, I still continue to use the funnel although I am bot really convinced that it makes any difference.

Then only real benefit of these tubes is if the firearm has a patent breech, the tube ensures the powder all goes in there.

I use the loading tube for my Whitworth and Volunteers but not for the Enfields.

Thank you gentlemen, so it has nothing to do with fouling. I am not sure what a patient breach is Adam but I can understand it is important to get the powder into the same place each time so I will make or buy a funnel.

It is a Patent, not patient, Breech

Image

The one on the right is a version of Nocks Patent breech, the one on the left is a simplified design similar to the ones found on modern reproductions.

If your gun is fouling sufficient for it to impede the loading of it. then you must be using Krankies nutty slack and/or have poor loading and fouling management procedures.
