would it take a side handle ?

No idea I’m afraid, I can take a few close up photos of the upper receiver and bolt assembly if interested?

Someone like Mark Bradley could carry out that work well. I’d say it’d want a new bolt carrier, Lantac make very good manual bolt groups.
