Hello from Basingstoke

Hello all,
I'm new to shooting and stumbled across this forum whilst trying to educate myself a bit on the internet. Seems like a great place to learn a lot quickly.
I'm not an FAC holder yet, but I'm getting there. My journey started with an NRA open day back in September 2010 at Bisley. Since then, I've been shooting with Wessex Rifles and London Practical Shooting Club and absolutely loving it.
FAC application has been in since beginning of July and The Hampshire Constabulary told me today that they passed it to the FEO at the end of July, so he should be in touch soon.
Sooooo much to learn, but I'll try to use the search function and not ask too many stupid questions.
Cheers,
Jud

Welcome to the forum Judders, good to hear a prospective shooter has joined the ranks of F-B(UK). Personally I think you should ask as many questions as possible as it keeps the older forum members awake
What calibres have you applied for and have you decided on final choice of rifles and if you will reload at some stage?

Hi Judders,
Great to see you on board, ask away!
Good luck with the FAC.

Thanks all.
Calibres - I've applied for .308/7.62, .303, .22LR and 7.62x39. I appreciate this may be a bit ambitious, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I'm thinking I should have asked for a .223/5.56 too, but I guess it's a bit late now.
Rifles - No final decisions, but pretty certain I'd like a Remy 700 action with ACIS stock in .308 (probably with Armalon tinkering on barrel, mag etc.). A Lee Enfield .303 and a straight-pull version of the AK-47. No clue on the .22LR just yet.
Reloading - well, I was certain that I wouldn't, but after reading stacks of info about it, I think I'm going to end up doing it. It seems as though there's not much point spending a load on decent kit, only to shove ammo into it that isn't consistent. So, requires more research/advice me thinks. That said, I think I'll stick with factory ammo for a little while at least, no matter what.

Not too late to ask for a .223. When your FET comes to the house discuss with them that you are interested in practical shooting and would like to have a .223
It is easier to have them added now, as later on will cost you money and involve sending your FAC back with a letter requesting the addition.
The FET should not be someone to be feared, respected maybe, but you should feel free to discuss with him your future plans,

There we go, I learnt something new on F-B UK already.
Thanks for that, I'll have a chat with him about it.
I'd planned on using the .308 for practical, as many do at LPSC. But after the day with LPSC on Sunday, I can see the advantages of a .223 AR-style rifle, particularly on the shorter ranges.
If Mrs.Judders asks..."They all cost £100 each dear".

The Rem 700 may not like Milsurp but it will love HPS and RUAG ammunition. To this day I maintain that *the* most accurate .308 I have ever shot at 1000 yards was a Rem700 tweaked by Armalon :goodjob:
The .303 - well my choice would be a P14 - lovely super accurate things, cheap as chips and .303 is readily available at a sensible(ish) price, the 7,62x59 will be fun to shoot and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to .22LR offerings.

Heh! Not if she is on the same forum as you...
....and apparently is considering a zombie gun again.
