Martini Carbine .303

#1 Post by JS569 »

I'm selling a 303 Martini carbine. It's sat in my cabinet for two years and I've done nothing with it, so it's taking up a slot. The issue is that the chamber has been cut to 'deactivate' it (please note in the eyes of the law this is still an S1 firearm and is on my FAC as such). I've weighed up rebarrelling it in 303, 44 and various other rimmed cartridges but haven't got round to it. The other option was deactivate it properly but again I've not got around to it.

So I'm putting it on here for a low price in the hope it can go to a home where it can be worked on or put on the wall once the appropriate steps have been taken. A certain gunsmith here quoted a fair price to rebarrel it but with a new baby and having done up a house, I don't want to invest the money in something I'll use so periodically which is a further reason for the sale.

I have also obtained a new firing pin which is included in the sale but not installed in the firearm.

Apart from the cut, it's in lovely condition and the markings show that the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry were issued it during October 1893 and was later sold out of service. From my limited research I believe about only 5,000 of these were made (I could be wrong on this point). Apparently, the chamber was most likely cut over a century ago as this was a common military deactivation for carbines issued to cadet organisations - the cut goes down to the level of the wood but bar the cut to the barrel no further damage has been done. It's got lots of history and I'd love to shoot it. Failing a sale here, I will most likely deactivate it and put it on my wall.

I'd be very interested but I'd need to make a call or 2 first ...

Also, your pics are GPS tagged so anyone looking at that album can see where they are taken

Happy to talk through, PM me your number and we can arrange a chat.

Thanks for the heads up on the GPS location. Luckily we don't live there anymore but it's worth knowing for the future!
