Just a thought, why can't you use rifle primers?

Hi Roger,
I have a tub of H110 and its for 44 magnum.
As you are probably aware it is a tough powder to ignite (especially in the colder weather)

My preliminary research on and offline advises the use of "magnum" large pistol primers otherwise erratic pressures and velocities will be encountered.

So tempting as it might be to try large rifle magnum primers they are actually different in height and cup thickness as they are designed for higher pressures.

You may get misfires depending on how strong your firing pin is. I'm sure there are those who will say I use them all the time but check what your loading manual lists, e.g. Hornady use pistol primers in their rifle loadings for .357", .44" .45".

This may be down to those cases being nominally cut for pistol though I'm sure with enough force you could make them fit but I wouldn't risk it.

As an illustration:

Large rifle min height 0.1230
Large pistol min height 0.1150

I was short in lockdown so used large rifle primers for a load of .45ACP cases, found they seated perfectly flush and all fired fine through a .45 Lee Enfield, even grouped well.

I'm pretty sure I have some here. I'm at Bisley/Purbright helping out with the two CSR skills days next month (8th and 15th) if that's any good for you.
I'll check quantity when I get to the workshop later.

I use standard Winchester large pistol primers with H110.
It does say on the packet "for standard or magnum pistol loads"
You can get a situation with H110 where the powder wont ignite and you get a bullet stuck up the barrel and a very fine powder everywhere.
As I found out with my Dan Wesson 357!
