I’ve been looking at getting a .223 as I’ve got a slot on my ticket (been shooting Rimfire for a couple years), I’ve seen a few different variations of Remington 700s, so he’s The question - barrel length and twist rate, 26” with 1-12 twist or shorter with 1-8/1-9 twist?
Please help

Might depend what you intend to do with it. Personally I would go for 1 in 9 twist which will cope with bullets up to around 77gns.
A 24inch barrel would get you to a 1000yds as well.

For ranges then deffo 1-8 or 1-9, better for heavier bullets.

Remington 700 Police in .223 has a 26” barrel, 1 in 9” twist. HS Precision stock. Much underrated rifle.

I had one of those and though it was too long for rabbiting, so I had it cut down to 20 inches and had Wildcat moderator put on, which took it back up to 24 inches but it looked OK.
The accuracy was absolutely phenomenal and would clover leaf at 150yds.
And yes, I wasn't using it because I had the .243 so sold it to a lad who worked for the Forestry commission................Why do we do these things any???? .

I have a Remington 700 in .223 with a 20 inch barrel (1:9), in an MDT chassis and shoot it out to 600 yards using 69gr Sierra MatchKing bullets. The target below is from a 600 yard Benchrest competition in 2020,

The Remington 700 SPS Tactical is a good choice - 20 inch barrel in a 1-in-9 twist in the .223 chambering. I have the same rifle in .308 Win. I would recommend however that you look at changing out the trigger - my favourite is from Trigger Tech. Well worth the price.
