Hi all,
As per title, looking for a Lyman 314-299. Gas checked.
One that actually drops at .314

All help appreciated

To get the Lyman .314-299 to drop near .314" you will need to use a hard alloy which is counter to lead free/accurate shooting unless the bullet is of perfect fit to the chamber/freebore/bore.

It is is also a bore riding design so that needs to be taken onto account dimensionally.

You would be better off looking for an NOE .316-299.

What are you seeking to use it for/with.?

Its going to be for a Lee Enfield No4 Mk2 .303, 1949 Fazakerley.
Ammo is getting silly and I want to cast, gas check and powder coat for it.
Am I correct in thinking a bore riding design does not work too well with powdercoating?

Why would you want to powder coat????

Because I don't have a lubrisiser and I have access to powder coating.

Powder coating does not remove the need for sizing and all other cast bullet requirements.

A design like the 314-299 would especially need lube in the lube grooves as its primary function is hydraulic cushioning. Unless the bore riding part of the bullet is a perfect fit for your bore then bullet slump is a real issue, lubed lube grooves mitigate this.

Unless of course you are using mouse fart loads, if so then there are better bullets than the 314-299.

Powder coating is no short cut!

No the bullet will be sized to the bore.
The idea is to push these faster than 17gr of Alliant 2400 would achieve.
I am unfamiliar with "hydraulic cushioning" I will look into it, thank you.

Try the Lee .312-185. Quite often these cast out big, mine cast out at .3138", but it doesn't take much work to lap the cavities larger. Mine now casts out at .3165" and I size at .316" to fit my, well worn, mosin. A couple of friends use the Lee 312-185 in their 303s, a long Lee and a P14, with good results and they use Lee liquid alox and the Lee sizing system. In the mosin best accuracy has been at between 1700 and 2000 fps, depending on powder.

Your first task is to slug the barrel to find out what the groove diameter actually is, if bullet diameter is even a couple of tenths of a thousandth of an inch under groove diameter you will just get patterns rather than groups.
