Hi all,

Just checked all my cases after a range day with my SVD 800 and 1000 yards.
Cases are Lapua 7.62x53R once fired, FL resized by me and fired. Gun shot okay, and no residual sooting on the outside of the cases.
Rings outside neck / shoulder. I used to use PPU brass which has thinner rims than the Lapua, could that be a factor ?

Any opinions are appreciated please ?

I saw similar with a new 6.5x47 barrel fitted to an M595, except that the rings were halfway down the body of the case.
I sent it back and the smith re-cut the chamber with a new undamaged reamer...
Or has this just started to happen with this barrel?

Hi Pete thanks. The gun has always left faint marks but not as proud as these. Looking at some retired prvi cases fired in the same gun I can see such faint marks on those in the same area.
What I will do next is fire some Russian lightball through it and see how they come out ?

If there is a ridge caused by the machining, it might vary with both pressure and brass supplier.
It would be worth loading a couple of rounds 2 or 3 grains lower than that which produced the result in your photo, and comparing it. The lighter pressure should produce a shallower groove.
Or borrow a borescope...in my case, there was a clearly visible ring in the chamber.

Good shout on the bore scope, as I do in fact have one, and have taken some pictures inside
Another note is that I measured the cases and they are shorter than my standard case length to of 2104". Couple that with the thicker rims = round too short ?

As comparison here is my 43 Tula PU Mosin Nagant also in 7.62x54r

It's a design feature on Russian made arms intended for their home civilian market. It is done for forensic purposes, any cases found at a crime scene will show to the authorities if the gun was either a civilian rifle or one stolen from the military. I don't actually know exactly when the Russian arms industry was required to do this but it's specific Russian thing.


I thought every knew about the neck ring on fired cases.

Not everyone has, or is interested in, Soviet rifles...
