Does anyone know of someone who can re-barrel a centre fire Savage rifle?

The beauty of the Savage barrel system is that you can buy an off the peg barrel and fit it yourself. The headspace is set by the locknut on the barrel. At one time I had two barrels and one action and would swap barrels depending on what calibre was planning to shoot.

I ordered a Shilen match barrel direct from Shilen USA, although I don't think it's quite so easy now. These look expensive from Brownells but there must be other suppliers.

Any gunsmith can rebarrel a savage. When it's rebarreled, the lock nut is not used with the barrel being torqued up as per any other rebarrel.
I have had 2 rebarrels on my savage ftr.

I know how to re-barrel it. I can make the wrench and buy the headspace guage. Its just all the extra hassle of needing a variation for the new barrel and disposing of the old one. The barrels stocked by brownell's are not what I'm after as they are lightweight and only 22 inches.

Ideally I would be happy with another Savage barrel; .223, 26 inch heavy varmint / target, 1 in 9 twist. I've tried the importer, viking arms, but they don't pick up the phone or answer emails.

So can anyone recommend someone who can get me a barrel and fit it? I know I can go down the route having one of the established re-barrel gunsmiths that will start with a barrel blank but then I'm looking at over a thousand pounds and several months wait, whereas I know Savage offer replacement barrels.

We bought ours from Stuart Anselm at Osprey Rifles. Based at Diggle, I think.....or try Brian Fox at Foxfirearms, also at Diggle. I'm sure they'll take the old one off you.

Your local RFD should be able to order a pre-fit directly from Walther in Germany. Unfortunately their website is down at the moment. If you decide to go that way I have the barrel spanner that you could borrow.
