Hi all, what, in your opinion, would be a rough price for a Marlin 38/357 underlever? been offered one thats got the octagon barrel and the JM stamp in the circle on the right hand side near the breach, shoots really well with open sights and looks like new with no marks on the wood at all. He is going to sell it a bit later on as he is not renewing his licence and I don't want to insult him with a silly offer?

Firearms sales are slow at the moment, but the rifle seems the real deal and they are very good, ask him what he would be happy with, and if you like the price just buy it.

Have a look on Gunstar and compare one is £800 and one is £699.
Make sure its the proper JM. If unsure take somebody who knows and can check out its condition and operation.

Thanks, had a look at a couple in a gunsmiths near me and they are both over the £800 mark and do have some marks on them and they don't have the octagon barrels so I think it's probably not a bad buy! Will have another shoot with it when I see him next down the range.

Retail price new is near £1300, so if this is as good as you say then £800 is a bloody good deal.

And it's a JM stamped one and not a Remlin.

Thanks, it is definitely got the JM stamp on it and has no marks on it and he said he has only put around 800 rounds through it since lockdown which he said I could check with the club records if needed so I think I will have another shoot with it and then ask him to give me first offer to buy when he decides to let it go!

The last of the JM ones were as bad as the early Remington ones, check the age. Towards the end, I guess the tooling was already worn out and no one was paying to fix it.
Some of the later Remington made rifles I've seen were pretty good, as fine as the new Ruglin ones we've had here - these are good rifles but a little tight.

And nothing that can't be fixed.
