Accuracy

Does anyone know why when I put a SAK silencer on my Hammerli Tac R1 the accuracy went all over the place when using 1148ft/s ammo but fine using 1080ft/s ammo, is it down to the 16" barrel or the silencer not being able to handle the higher velocity ammo? With just the flash hider on it shoots either ok so must be the silencer causing the problem, don't mind using the slower ammo but was just wondering why this happens and if anyone else has found this to be a problem?

Did it do that just once or have you tried it on and off and it does it everytime?

IIRC the TAC R1 has a solid barrel and not a tensioned pencil barrel with a shroud? If it had of been the latter I would've suggested the moderator wasn't put on with the same torque between ammo types but if the former that shouldn't matter.

Yes tried it a few times and it happened every time, shot well before and then when I added the silencer the POA moved considerably and the accuracy went out the window with the 1184ft/s rounds so tried the 1084ft/s rounds and had to adjust the POA back to where it was and the accuracy returned so must be the silencer/1184ft/s combo but can't see why unless it's the short 16" barrel or maybe the harmonics?

Have you checked the sound mod for baffle strikes or any indication that its being hit by the bullets?

Had a look and it doesn't seem as if there are any strikes but if the bullets were catching the baffle wouldn't this also happen with the slower bullets as well? Going to try some Norma Tac22 1082ft/s and some CCI Standard 1070ft/s tomorrow to see how they group as well?

I was thinking the alignment of the mod on the threads might be tight/slightly off and a different bullet design might be touching one of the baffle/exit. Any strikes would be extremely slight

I'll see hoe it shoots tonight with different ammo and if it's still not good think I will go back the flash hider!! Maybe get someone else at the club to try the silencer on their AR?

I had the same problem with a CZ and it turned out to be baffle strikes. Subs were striking too but were deflected less than the supers for me. My assumption for this was that supers were deforming more from the baffle strike and so changing the POI more than subs. Just a theory though.

Tried the other ammo and was still getting fliers and the quicker I fired the more fliers I got so took it off put on the flash hider and back to 20mm groups so will forget the silencer!!!

As mentioned, likely baffle strike - if the muzzle has been cut slightly out, or to the outside of the barrel rather than the internal barrel then it could be the cause - you don't see it on the flash hider because the crown is wide open, whereas decent moderators have very small holes farther out from the barrel crown.

I had this on my Sako P94s, it only became apparent when I changed mod to one with a smaller exit - had to get the thread re-cut concentrically to the bore.
