Stock question for the Knowers of the Mauser

#1 Post by Tower75 »

Hi guys.

I've got me a G98 Spandu barreled-action that is currently sitting, in what I thought was, a Turkish Mauser stock.

When I bought the rifle I was told it was a bitzer, made of spare parts, and the stock was off of a Turk. As the stock is the exact profile of a German Mauser I didn't care much. The rifle is technically "factory correct", in appearances at least.

Now, something that has always bugged me is that just in front of the breech ring and behind the "roller coster" sights are two slots cut into the stock. I assume that these slots are for the Turkish handguard, as those things ran from breech ring, over the rear sight and ended at the read barrel band.

But all pictures I have seen of a Turkish Mauser shows a completely different nosecap to the German ones, and the Turk stocks don't look like they could take a German nose cap. My Mauser has the German nose cap.

Here's a pic of the offending slots. What do you think? Are these slots for a Turkish handguard, signifying that I do have a Turkish stock?

Also, being that the German "roller coster" sight is a bulky git, do you think the stock would have undergone inletting so that the German barreled action can sit in it?

At least you found your answer. :good:

Mausers aren't my cup of tea - I would have been as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

No worries :D

ps. It's true what they say about chocolate fireguards. Had one, and it didn't work out.
