James came over Sunday, he had broken a valve spring on his Husaberg so we dropped the valves out, cleaned everything, re lapped the valves, fitted new springs and keepers etc and popped it back together.

I remember my father showing me how to do this many years ago albeit on a pre war 350 Enfield so it was fun to show my son.

Not sure I should admit this......... my old man was an aged hippy. By the time I was four I could recite most Bob Dylan tracks and roll a three skin joint!! :shifty: :shock: :?

My second car, X-reg Escort estate. Rear wheel bearings were noisy so I bought the parts. My dad talked me through the first one then left me to do the other alone. Didn't think much of it at the time but I know he was proud of me

I used to push a hand cart about 3 miles round trip scavenging logs to burn 'cos we couldn't afford coal.

Taught me the value of things.

Well, I was only 15 months old when he was killed.

Aye, I was 6 when dad copped it down the mines. But my "new" dad did me proud.

Taught me to fish and that was it...I did learn to paint and f@rt about with electrical things by watching him though..oh and I always have my sleeves rolled up just like he used to do. Did that since I was a kid, can't stand long sleeves now. Apart from that sod all!

I bought I Triumph Spitfire when I was 18 and it had so many problems I am now pretty good mechanic ..Built a few rally cars in my day.

With my dad who alass been dead now for nearly 20 years i was rough shooting with a 4/10 and air rifle from the age of 3 or 4 i shot my pheasant under his guidance at 6 and caught my first 1lb + eel at 5 years old. i wish he was here now to enjoy the shootng world as he was a countyman at heart although he was on the road repping all the time. I can remember when we lived at blakeney him going beach fishing on xmas eve and us eating cod for breakfast xmas day, thats how i remember my dad,, miss you.

Just remembered whilst typeing this, about the day we were clearing out some old boxes off his and finding loads or .22lr ammo from his "youth" and going down to the nearest lake and chucking the lot in .

Taught me discipline (in a good way) and about Morals,scrupals, Courage of your convictions, and respect for my elders,,,things like giiving up your seat on a bus,,,stepping off the pavement for an old or disabled person,,Holding open a door for someone,,,say Please and thank you,,,,and yes Roll a Fag,, and how to fish etc, etc, and get drunk and behave your self at the same time,and fix things, wash and Iron Clothes as did my Mum and cook...

Much of what is sadly lacking with some kids thesedays,,,but not only kids eh????

We came back to the UK when I was 6 1/2 (Dad was posted overseas so we went as well).
By the time I was 7 I was shooting (.410), fishing, ferretting and setting snares.
I use to really enjoy going shooting or ferretting on Boxing Day.
It started a life long love of the countryside.
I still have the .410 and it still gets used sometimes
