Seen a K98a, Erdorf 1917 dated, looks in good condition for £550, anyone known much about these?

Only a tad. The 98a, not to be confused with the 98K, was a carbine built before WWI for use for cavalry. During the Great War it was issued to cavalry, mountain troopers, and I believe stormtroopers too, I've also seen many pics of standard squaddies in the trenches with them too.

Dave,
I believe the marking was ERFURT 1917?.
I have seen one here from the battlefield.
Receiver ring was smaller diameter than normal 98. Bolt handle was bent quite like on the 98K, not the straight one of the G98 of the time.
Barrel was 500mm long, stepepd like all the 98, but with long tapers in junctions instead as the sharp shoulders.
Upper forearm was fixed in a protruding recess in the front of receiver.
Kicking even more then a Berthier Mousqueton on shooting!!!
