Another Noob

I live not far from Manchester, but have stalking in both North Yorkshire (roe and fallow) and in Argyle (roe and red). I regularly lamp foxes over in Macclesfield and drop a few rabbits and an occasional fox closer to home.
I work in the rail industry so the shifts work in well with my 3 main passions of Stalking, working our dogs, and running a Home Office Approved gun club.

During the season, my wife and I work 2 of our 3 dogs on pheasant shoots and grouse moors. Out of season, one accompanies me on rough shooting trips with the shotgun. Third dog accompanies me on all my stalking trips and, at 15 months old has the potential to be an excellent deer dog.

I have owned lots of calibres since I started shooting 20+ years ago up to, and including 50BMG. I now settle on 22, 17, 243, 22-250, 7x57, 308, 303 and 45-70. All are used on all legal quarry, as well as at the range. To be honest, the 7x57 and 303 don't get used much, but the '57 has sentimental value and the Enfield is just both a privilidge and a guilty pleasure to shoot

I have reloaded since my pistol days, and continue to load all my own centrefire ammo. Along with a good pal, I travel to Bulgaria a couple of times a year to continue my passion for shooting pistols.

Danny (DL) suggested I take a look at the forum and, I must say, it seems a massive impovement on some other forums available at the moment. After having a good look around, I'll dive in at the deep end

Welcome to F-B(UK) Russ, sounds like you are a busy person :good:

A good selection of cartridges as well including a few I would certainly like to try one day. What brass are you using with your 45-70?

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I am desperately trying to justify the collection. Since moving away from targets and on to deer a few years ago, I really don't need as many. Recently I sold a 22, 243WSSM, and 300WSM as well as a few shotties. The ones I have now all do a job on live quarry and can be plinked on the range too.

My out and out Fav's tho are the 17 for rabbits, 22-250 for fox (and roe in Scotland) and 243 for roe/fallow. The 308 has never been a fav cartridge of mine, and I need to do some research on replacing it (may consider a 7-08). The 303 is just a pleasure to shoot and I try to shoot it as a treat rather than as a workhorse nowadays.

Ovenpaa, I use Winchester brass which I bought direct from the USA a few years ago. Never had a problem with it. Due to another bit of daft legislation, I can use the 45-70 on any deer in England, but not in Scotland! It certainly knocks over woodland roe deer, which is where I use it most. Its also a cracking indoor range gun if loaded with a 405gn bullet and kept down to less than 2000fps
