I got the latest Shooting Sports magazine yesterday (BTW Happy New Year to you all! ) and in it was mentioned the "new" round from Hornady - the 17 Hornet.

So I went on to the Hornady site to see what they had to say http://www.hornady.com/store/17-Hornet/

While watching the vid, I felt Hornady was being very disingenuous in implying that it was all their idea. Not a single reference to PO Ackley and his 17 Ackley Hornet, which originated from the early 1950's (?)

There are some slight differences - the Hornady 17 Hornet has a 25 deg shoulder and Ackley's was 30 or 35 deg (depending on your source), but not enough to warrant claiming it all for themselves IMO.

It's nice to see something different on the market (and a wildcat going mainstream), I just wish Hornady had said something like, "We've taken Ackley's original 17 Hornet and made some changes for today's powders and rifles."

BTW Hornady is teaming up with Savage for the release of the 17 Hornet. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/201 ... 17-hornet/
If I was offered a Model 25 LV-T in 17 Hornet :o , I might be wiling to forgive Hornadys ecomony with the facts! ;)

I'd say that this is a better direction with regard to .17 than the rimfire offerings - if only for the reason that the cartridges are reloadable

The Savage bolt guns tend to get overlooked in the UK, but my experience of them from NZ was that they were an extremely popular rifle & very very accurate. The adjustable trigger in the Savage has to be one of the best out there on a factory offering

Will await developments once the .17 Savages arrive in the UK...

Would make a real great Varmint/Fox combination

That's my thought too, but how much is Edgar Bros going to charge for the Savage?

...will check with my RFD when they open again after the bank holiday.
Would guess they'll be priced much the same as other Savage rifles of that model

Berger do a 25gn target bullet, which could make it fun out to 300m.

I like the look of the 17 Hornet, but in the UK, I think it might be a while before we can get anything to make the ammunition for it.

Also, 17 Fireball doesn't use much more powder and has a more modern case design, since it's not based on a rimmed cartridge. I'm torn between them!
