Hello all,

About 1, maybe 2 years ago I came into possession of the complete set of a WWI booklet series called "The War Illustrated", for those of you that are nor familiar with it, God knows I wasn't, TWI was regular "news" rag that was published during WWI for the British.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_Illustrated

After the War the entire series was combined into 9 volumes, each with around 2000 photographs!! :shock:

I thought I'd share just a few here. You never know, they might be interesting to someone.

Also, just a thought, if people are interested, and the Mods think it's a good idea, I could post a few photos every week, I know a few forums that do similar (yes, I'm stealing ideas) but it might be fun.

Anyway, here's just a few from the first TWI booklet, published about 2 weeks after the War started!

Also, apologies for the scan-blur, these books are OLD! and very heavy and tatey, hard to scan.

Britain Prepares Against the Teutonic Tyrant;

Top: Troops from Ireland. Detachment of the Royal Horse Artillery marching through Dublin. Since the mobilisation order similar scenes have been witnessed in almost every town in the United Kingdom.

Left: Our handy-man is ready!

Bottom: The contagious enthusiasm of our fighting men. Troops giving a rousing cheer before they left Derby.

Industrial England becomes an Armed Camp;

TL: Artillerymen of the Expeditionary Force at Aldershot, loading their limbers with live shells

TR: A Troop of soldiers, in marching order, treading the traffic of the Thames Embankment. All last week London has resounded to the tramp of her armed sons.

M: Territorials holding up a motor-car, as they guard an important position on a country road.

B: The Guards marching past Buckingham Palace before setting out on active service.

Bugger, I was hoping you could click on the pictures to make them bigger. I guess the only way to do that is to upload them onto the Forum, not share them from a photo-storage site?

We had some odd copies at home. Don't know what became of them. Think there was some family/regiment news in them. Also remember seeing a bound set before somewhere, school library perhaps.
