Looking for tidy 7.62/.308 for target shooting 100-1000 yds, could buy new Tikka T3 varmint for £835, so that sets the top end of the budget.

Ideally within a couple of hours drive from Reading.

You can pick up a Parker Hale 1200 TX for about £300 on GunTrader

I shot next to a guy shooting Tikka t3 varmint last year with factory ammunition at 100 yards on Short Siberia, not sure of the calibre but he used it for hunting.

I was amazed when I saw his grouping, it really was one hole groups, not even clover leaf. I have serious respect for this rifle and am sure you will do well with it.

Good luck in your search,

DM

I am being drawn to the T3 Sporter in 6.5x55 - looks like it could be fun to shoot with!

I have one for sale in as new condition although a little dearer than that.

I've seen a Parker Hale in use at Bisley, but it had aperture sights of some sort. Can a scope be mounted easily?

I seem to recall it was a single shot, not magazine fed. Is that arrangement practical for McQueen?

(sorry about all the questions, I'm learning as I go)

Single feed for McQueens is fine and is actually more relaxed than a magazine change at some point.

As far as fitting a 'scope, it depends on the type of mounts it has.

As I found out to my cost last year, the Mc Queens rules are interpreted differently by different people even during "NRA" organised competitions.
If ran as I understand it from the GRAW/Phoenix rule book, single feed with your ammunition carefully laid out, can be done and I have done it with varying success. In fact at the FB-UK shoot last year I believe I managed a 50-7 doing this.
However there are some comps that are ran just too fast and once you start trying to rush things it all goes to pot.
I have now fitted a magazine and hope not to be caught out again by a marker who rushed things through at facing for 2 seconds or until shot, whichever is soonest, then an away time of 3 seconds before re appearing!
