Accuracy International cheek pad

I have an AI/AE without the adjustable cheek pad and find the stock a bit low for a decent cheek weld when shooting prone. Now I can always go and get a new AI stock with adjustable stock but a couple of things put me off, firstly I would need to remove the pad every time I wanted to remove the bolt which means I have to mess about returning it to the original position and secondly they are GBP145 with the fixing screws which seems rather steep considering what it is.

So I was thinking of forming something like this out of aluminium sheet, slot it for adjustment and cover it with neoprene for comfort. The adjusting screws going would go through the chassis system in the stock which from memory is around 25mmx35mm so plenty robust enough for a couple of M6 set screws. So is this a do it or is it 'step away from rifle' thing. I have no issues with doing the work and It would be neatly executed but am I wrong to do it this to an AI?

If it works then its up to you, I have to take the cheek piece off my AW every time I remove the bolt its no big deal IMO, and as for re adjusting it maybe im lucky as it is in its lowest position, the one in your pic is that the Kydex one? I should imagine they are quite simple to make (if you have the right kit to hand)
just my 2d

Not sure what make it is as it was just a picture I found. I have another AI with an adjustable cheek pad in the cabinet and it needs to be just a tad off the bottom to be right for me. I will make one as a mock up this weekend and see how it looks before I start drilling holes in things....

Dave,

That looks like the Kartsen cheek piece I had on my HS precision stock, bottom of the page below. http://www.nwcustomparts.com/fullbore/accessories.html

Did you read Rob Hunters article on the changes that he made to the AI stock? http://uktactical.webs.com/whatswrongwithaistocks.htm

Not sure if that is the answer or not, but it may give you an idea in which direction you wish to go.

I followed the link above re the cheek piece on NWC site, at £65 ish each a bit costly. Have a look at the "STOCKADE. Adjustable comb http://www.stockadeproducts.co.uk/produ ... oductID=81 a lot cheaper, but it may give you more design ideas.

Good luck,

DM

Good article, thanks for that DM also a handy link, that is in principle is what I am going to attempt this coming weekend. I will post pictures for comment before drilling holes in it.

Here it is built and tested for fit, it feels spot on for me as well. I will reduce the overhang below the screw slots as it is not needed and stick some 3mm closed cell neoprene to it for comfort after everything has been sprayed matt black, more pictures to follow.

Time: 3 hours including making a cardboard template
Materials: 3mm Alloy sheet, 2x6mm smooth head bolts (Not fitted in picture)
Tools required: Jigsaw, cordless drill, files, cups of tea.

PINK!! LOL This is as close as I get to a black gun, I need to do a count up but I think it has had around 3500 rounds through it now and I still enjoy shooting with it as much as the first day I took out. It feels a bit like an old workhorse these days, very predictable and great fun from 300m out to 1100m.

It also seems to work well when I put Milsurp through it. The cheaper the better :D
