Cawdor 14/10/12

#1 Post by Sandgroper »

I seem to be on a roll this month! party2 Today Strathpeffer RPC was shooting at Cawdor. Due to a lack of RCOs the day was going to finish at 1400. As it was, we were all done and dusted by 1330 - just before the heavens opened up! Prior to that it was really good conditions - slightly overcast, mild and hardly any wind! :good: The later was a blessing as my wind reading is not the best but at Cawdor, I just give up trying to work it out!

I had my Steyr M95 and my Rossi single shot (223) with me. I surprised myself with my consistency today. I got sorted with the M95 first and was pleasantly surprised how much better I shot it this time around. Kept it in the scoring zone quiet easily and I only stopped shooting it because I was conscious of time and my right eye was getting tired as it's not my master eye.

At 200m with the Steyr

After finishing with the M95, I moved onto the Rossi. After a small hiccup resulting in it having to be rezeroed - I started to enjoy shooting it. It is stupidly accurate (55gn ammo) and I found breaking it open to extract and reload helped me relax. I had not planned to shoot it beyond 300m (forgot my notes and could only remember the drops to 300m  ) but was feeling really confident with it, so I took it back to the next point. I had always thought it was 400m but found out afterwards it is actually 460m (500 yds). This is even better, given it was a consistent 2 mil dot drop onto the target, meaning that next time I can take it back to 600m knowing that I should on target just by using the mil dots. fingerscrossed

I have some 55gn Prvi ammo due soon - I'm so looking forward to giving it go with the Rossi and seeing how I do at 600m with it.

All in all a very good day. clapclap

It's a great looking range Grant. I really want to get up there next year for a shoot. Glad you had a great day. We shot PSG In the p*** rain. Nice ammo box!

Carbine  . The recoil isn't as bad as some websites would have you believe, but is more noticeable when I shoot it without the sling. I'm really liking the straight pull action. It might not be as refined as a K31, but it does the business and the action proved itself in WW1 and 2.

Fusillade fire from mass ranks of .303's seems to be the normal method up here! ;)

The "flash, bang, wallop" effect from the Steyr seems to put them off as well.
