.22LR Ammo
Hi all,
I usually purchase ammo only for use while at my local club, i.e. I buy it and shoot it, so it does not go on my ticket.
I am thinking of getting some ammo to use which I will keep at home, my club has either Eley 'Sport', or Eley 'Match' so I was was wondering what people thought of these, and is there better ammo available for the same price ranges? We only shoot 25m inside, but I am also hoping to go where I can shoot 50m or even 100m

What price do the Eley cost, also are you competition shooting or just plinking?
I've not used the Eley but I do use RWS Target which is £5 for 50 or £85 1000 at our range which I get good results from, I've also tried Geco and Remington Thunderbolt which were around £3.50 for 50 but they were rubbish for any consistent scores and I use CCI mini mags in my black gun.

All depends on discipline and your shooting standard really. If you are a prone competition shooter with a 99 average for instance, you probably wouldn't use Eley Club...I haven't shot prone for years now, so I don't know what the current "Standard" is.
Carbine "black rifle" Gallery style shooting I recommend CCI Mini Mag every time!....can't be beaten.
Re: .22LR Ammo
I always used to use Eley Club, until one time when I went to train with the national sqaud and thought I would get some Match (.22 isn't actually my discipline, I was using it for cross-training). I could never tell the difference of using Match over Club at 25 yards or 50 meters, so I went back to Club at a much lower price, and I found that Club would nail the pip every time if a good shot was fired. I think the production is the same but the more expensive product has more quality testing. Ideally I'd suggest doing some empirical testing, preferably blind testing, to see if you can tell the difference on target. You may just find a batch that suits your rifle better, competely independantly of which product it is.Harrier1980 wrote:my club has either Eley 'Sport', or Eley 'Match' so I was was wondering what people thought of these, and is there better ammo available for the same price ranges? Re: .22LR Ammo
I tend to only shoot .22 in the fields now, but if I remember correctly the serious small-bore prone rifle chaps at my club tend to use Eley Match or Eley Tenex (expensive!) if it's any help. The lightweight sporting rifle shooters tend to use a big variety of different (and generally cheaper) ammo.

Re: .22LR Ammo
We shoot SK Lapua Std + at club and national GR level and I have found it to be reliable, consistent if perhaps a little waxy. Cheap at just under £80 per thousand.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!

Thanks for the info so far,
I think if I buy bulk from the club it is about £80 for 1000 and £160 for Match. I am certainly not getting into the 90s yet, but as the good guys in the club are using match, I wondered if that was why.
I think I will have to try the match and see if there is a difference, but I was just seeing if there are other rounds that may be better, and if there would be much difference at 25m.

I always shot Ely club and I suspect it out shot me the vast majority of the time.
+ Another vote for CCI Minimag in black stuff.

Re: .22LR Ammo
Buy the best ammo you can afford, then that is one variable that you eliminated. I have used Eley Match and RWS R50, both are good (my average at 25m is 98.7). However it is important to experiment with different brands and batches, as some people find a cheaper ammo is just as good.
Re: .22LR Ammo
Please take no offence at this, none is meant, don't even worry about what type of ammo you are using until you have achieved 96-97 average, until then it really doesn't matter.Harrier1980 wrote:Thanks for the info so far,

Just concentrate on getting the average consistently into the mid 90's first!
Most club ammo is really quite good enough to hit 98's on a consistent basis.
