Howdy FB'ers

#1 Post by smack »

Hi All,

Been lurking for some time but signed up as a few friends are on here, and you seem like a decent lot!

Grew up shooting thanks to having friends on farms, and my dad buying me my first rifle when I was 14. (wise? err, probably not). If he knew I made my own moderators, and used our urban backyard as a temporary range with subsonic ammo when they were out and I was bored he might be a little upset. Probably not wise to tell him that one, ever! Used to visit my local range, and shoot there getting to shoot lots of fun service rifles quite often, and friends farms, lamping from vehicles etc.

Gave up shooting in the mid 90's when I had to hand in my guns thanks to a change of law where I lived (semi auto ban), and gave it up as I was too busy with Uni, cars, girls, drinking, and no longer lived to easy accessible shooting locations.

Some 16 years later I am getting back into it, thanks to a few friends who shoot, and found a friendly local club, who are well on to helping my clear out my bank account with my purchases!

Cheers guys,

Well yes I am originally from somewhere upside down, but been living in blighty for years, into double digits now... I live in Surrey, spitting distance from you know where.

Apart from some brief shooting on a friends property in the US (pinking beer cans with pistols), until this year it was 16 years ago since I fired a gun, thanks to the OH buying me a shooting session at the NSRA for my birthday or christmas, to motivate me to get back into shooting (I knew you could own a shotgun for years, but that never interested enough to bother applying for, and people told me rifle ownership was very difficult to get – basically they didn’t know, so that is what they thought). When the instructor handed me a 10/22, I said “Great, this was my first gun when I was 14! I didn’t know you can have these!”. The instructors response was the likes of well I don’t have to show you how to use one then, and you can teach you OH too.

It was like was back as a teenager shooting it for the first time. Well apart from the magazines were so gummed up with lube from the bullets that it jammed every 3rd shot, and without thinking, quickly tilting the rifle to the right, pulling back the cocking handle and giving the gun a shake to clear the spent case and off shooting again like I was so used to doing when I used the unreliable high capacity mags years ago. Yup, you don’t forget to ride a bike, or forget to shoot a gun it seems.

So that started me on the path of picking up shooting again, and the OH too (not sure if guns and bullets are cheaper than buying her shoes and handbags…) 16 years later, I found shooting more expensive than it was. But then I have more money to spend on toys then I ever did back then.
