They do group better with the bayonet extended.

My favourite is the original M38 without the bayonet, I had a war time manufacture one and looked real rough on the outside but where it mattered on the bolt action and barrel the parts were smoothed and well fitted.

+1 , shoot with the bayo out, they shoot good with the Hungarian silvertip (anti aircraft ammo) Sadly I cannot get hold of any now :/

Russian lightball (dirty) i can get, but that silvertip was /is the best surplus ammo I have used in all my guns !

Peter Lawman had a few cans of Silver tip HB a while back so could be worth a try, also FRS had some heavy ball a bit back.

I intend to reload for this one as well, hope to do some test firing this week, Privi + reload + milsurp. Reference the Hex receiver I posted pictures on a Mosin Nagant site to find out any info, I was asked what markings were on the underside of the tang. Stripped it down, tang marks on receiver Tula Hammer stamp+28 (1928) stamped over Tula star+44 (1944) and Tula 1944 barrel. They said nice find so I'm very happy with it, just got to shoot it.

Shot this at Bisley on the zero range, wow you want to see the muzzle flash, folded out the bayonet not a problem (ovenpaa). All 30 bullets in the black, slightly more spread than my mauser, it is only a short barrel. I know distance is not much of a challenge but that was fun. Will have to wait until I can use it on a proper range.

The problem I have is with the bayonet folded closed because it is very close to your fingers when supporting the rifle. What ammunition did you use? I know Light ball is cheap but I also had good results at shorter distances with 147 grain S&B's and Vectan SP9 with Magtech primers, it made for a very cheap reload but is dependant on the bore being OK.

If it slugs OK I would certainly try them as a nice alternative to hard hitting milsurp, Christel will have the load details in her log book if you need more information.

I have decided as I have 2 Mosin Nagants to simplify the ammo I use, the m44 will stick with prvi partizan 182gr FMJ BT, and I will reload for the other as I have been. That way cases don't get mixed up in the wrong rifle.

I also keep cases to specific rifles, even the AI's in 7.72x51 are kept separate.

Hi looking for advice.

It's been suggested that I should slug the bores on my Mosin's to see if the barrels are .308 or .311 the later being a more common size I'm told. This I will have a go at soon, when I can get the slugs sorted. Having watched this done on you-tube several times, I thought I would use .31 cal black powder ball, as one chap in the US. I can't find them anywhere, looked at fishing weights but they tend not to be lead anymore, as I don't have knowledge of lead casting bullets (I buy mine in ready made sorry) is there another option.
