May be a dumb question but here goes ...!
I understand the 7.62 x 51 is the same as a .308, but is it the same for the 7.62 x 39 & the 7.62 x 57R?
If not what is the difference?

7.62x51 is a NATO round, 308win is the commercial round but is different...read this...

7.62 x 39 is a Russian round typical of the AK series of rifles...nothing to do with the above...read this...

and totally different from
7.62 x 57R...R meaning rim?

Umm so I take it that its only the 7.62 x 51 thats equal to a 308 then
so if a Rifle is listed as a 7.62 one would have to confirm which 7.62 it is Right?
its all so very confusing :?

Well you must have gleaned all the differences between the 762 nato and the 308win...yes... the others are totally different rounds. They wont work in the 762 nato or 308win.

If you applied for a 7.62x51/.308 then that is all you can have, if however you applied for 7.62 and got away with it then really you can still only have 7.62x51... the 54R (Yes Rimmed despite some calling it Russian) and the x39 are very different.Convict_keeper wrote:Umm so I take it that its only the 7.62 x 51 thats equal to a 308 then

The x39 is a cheap round to buy and build for and gets you into the straight action AK look alikes, great fun to shoot out to 300m with. The 54R again gets you into cheap milsurp again if there is such a thing, and is easy to build for but quite hard hitting as it is invariably in a light military rifle.
Having shot them all I prefer the 7.62x51/.308 but that is a very personal thing.

Why only the 7.62x51? If CK has been granted 7.62, then any 7.62 is allowed, be it, x39, x51, x54R or any of the 30 cals.ovenpaa wrote: If you applied for a 7.62x51/.308 then that is all you can have, if however you applied for 7.62 and got away with it then really you can still only have 7.62x51... the 54R (Yes Rimmed despite some calling it Russian) and the x39 are very different.
My ticket says 2x22, 1x6.5mm, 1x.30, 1x9mm, 1x.357/38.
