I take your point though, I do need to cut my gums and TBH the one rifle I would love to shoot and haven't yet, is an Enfield .303, maybe this should be my first, or perhaps a Kar98. I'll get a history lesson for free as well.

Thanks for the advice!
Hell, for that price, I'll sell you my .303.

You're just describing another door to the same room, there's nothing boring about it.

I've decided to join the NRA so Bisley is more accessible and the thought of shooting out past 1000 yards, is nerdy enough to appeal to my pseudo competitive aspergers syndrome. I will always have an interest in military history, but these rifles have their own strange functional beauty as well.

My local club only shoots out to 100 yards, so with that in mind, what would you recommend for the occasional visit to Bisley?
IainWR wrote:Can I be terribly boring?

For the sort of money you are sporting, both MikMak (Dolphin guns) and John Carmichael (HPS Ltd) and quite likely a few others will do you a really pretty, built for purpose F-TR rifle in .308Win that will hit a 5" circle at 1000 yards a lot more often than you can.

Now it won't look like a piece of military kit, but it will look like what it is - a rifle that you can learn with and keep learning with all the way to being World Champion, if you have the talent and the dedication.

Now, of course, our resident European Champion or our resident Palma team hopeful might have something to say about the relationship between the state of your kit and the state of your mind when it comes to the extremes of performance.

Assuming I did, what would you buy with the cash?

Hi Halo

Some advice -decide you shooting objective and goals and purchase with that in mind
Initially anything that goes bang will appeal but soon shortfalls in the firearm will frustrate you personal or sporting goals

This coming 19/1 Sat afternoon and 20/1 Sun morning I am at Bisley with various forum members
It would be worth a drive to see the various kits
Come talk and view the kits of our members

F-class
DOLPHIN GUN COMPANY www.dolphinguncompany.co.uk is a place to visit
DGC does a FTR gun for 2200 to 2400, add scope and bipod and you have a world class f-class rig
To give you an idea that gun is not far off the rig I used to win the 2012 Euro's
http://www.dolphinguncompany.co.uk/inde ... le-systems
Their is article about by DGC experience as well and an article in www.target shooter.co.uk DEC issue.

The show on 9 and 10 fed is with a visit you can see the DGC rigs ans

Related to the post above

When you get a chance to chat to people you can see what they do - whey they find it challenging about the different sport

So the within each sport the emphasis of the challenge changes
Speed, accuracy, environment, volume, precision, practical cross-over benefit, re-enactment
You need to find out what tickles you so that you investment in time, effort and money gives to the most pleasure.

Come see and learn from various people and find your niche... and understand that it may change over time.

For example I bought a stunning little CZ527 varminter in .223 put on a scope - for 600 yard shooting its
I cant find my post with its pics kukkuk

I used to be a pistol shooter (IPSC, IDPA) and I was no slouch either - "I am ff.... fast for a fat man"
Nowadays I am slow and my bullets are doing the speed!!

Thanks for all your pearls of wisdom, I can read every article on the internet, but it's clearly no substitute for experience. I'm already booked in for the shooting show and thankfully my FAC won't have come through by then or I might fill my gun safe in one hit... I have 10 weeks to try and work out what interests me the most, but all of my long term hobbies have always had that competitive edge.

I had a good look at DGC yesterday, interesting site, interesting rifles... I was surprised the rifles weren't more expensive, they could certainly charge more for such a niche market, everyone else does! Nice CZ527 Varminter BTW, you've got my brain ticking...

Thanks for the invite, I'd love to come down to Bisley and see what it's all about, although it would have to be Saturday afternoon. Apart from the time, where to meet and bring your ear defenders, is there anything I need to know?

Thanks for all the help, it's certainly appreciated. :good:

Cheers,

Craig.

On the point about warm clothes I would suggest something waterproof too, jacket and trousers. Being soaked through to the skin on a windy range can be chilly in the summer, let alone at this time of year :good:
