Most accurate .22 ammo

#1 Post by zzr1100 »

I know that rifles will tend to prefer a certain brand of ammo,
However from your experience what is the most accurate .22 ammo ?

I realise this isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but you need to try all the different brands to find out which one is most accurate in your rifle.

One tip - It's often not the most expensive one that's most accurate.

Eley tennex should be the most accurate as its the best produced and most expensive , but if the nut behind the butt cant shoot it wont make a lot of difference . Then again diferent ammo will work in one rifle but not in another . What do you intend on doing if your using good ammo you will need a good rifle as well , to be honest without a few details its not a lot of good picking names out of the air at random .
Give us a few details of what your using and what you want to use it for , then you can go and try a few out and see what works best for your needs .
I personaly have batch weighed Geco and had good results with it , at the moment Iam using Eley team in my BSA International , also using Lapua magazine bulk to good effect in a couple of other rifles , RWS target seems to work well in my Anschutz and my CZ 452 . Its a case of trial and error but its good fun spending hours testing to find out what works well and it has to fit my pocket as well , cant afford Eley Tennex .

personally when I was competeing in small-bore I found that RWS R50 was generally the most consistant ammo from batch to batch. Eley Tenex need to be batch tested before purchase as it varies wildly.

I tried doing some tests last year comparing Geco against Eley match - the results were inconclusive, as even resting my Anschutz on a bag, I found my own shooting would vary week to week; so not a consistent test...there was some indication that the Geco had more 'flyers'.

As has been said it does depend what you're using it for - My club ditched Geco as many (including myself) had problems with it not cycling well in semi-autos, and has changed to Mini-mag...it's reliable and appears reasonably accurate...and everyone has agreed to stick with it.

If I was going back to regular prone shooting again though; I think I be trying the upper end of what RWS is offering, as more folk seem to like it than anything else.

I have an Anschutz match 54 (made in 1974) with which I shoot prone. I have used Eley Match which is good (I can't afford Tenex). I am currently using RWS R50 which is very good, my 25m average is 98.8 ! I have done batch testing for this ammo and there is some variation between batches, so if you have high aspirations it is vital to batch test. This is usually free, but you are expected to buy 5000 at a time which may not suit eveyone. If anyone is interested RWS are doing batch testing at The Target Sports Centre, Charmouth, see http://www.thetunnel.co.uk/whats-on/12- ... ch-testing. As has already been said, it is what suits your gun that matters.

In my experience Ely Club or Sport have been head and shoulders over everything else, in anything accept a pure target rifle.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I have the same rifle...but my average wasn't as good as that!

About the 'tunnel' - I see they're building a 100 yard range - do you know when it'll be finished, and what calibers will be allowed?
