Re: newby here
thanks for the welcome.
ive got a few questions.but Ill start with this one.ive seen a sako A11. or is it A2.
in .308,,,,23"barrel.swarovski 6x42 scope, and a custom synthetic stock.a10 mod .bipod and sling.1 spare mag.for £895.the rifle is to far away to view.so what would be your thoughts on this gun.would it be suitable for targets out to 600yards and may be farther,
is it worth buying without a viewing first.as it being sold by a dealer ,what sort of things should I be asking.
as its my first full bore rifle ,I thought id ask for some advice
first,,many thanks

Re: newby here
Stotty, such a rifle sounds to be more suited to stalking and will probably have a light barrel that will soon warm up with repeated shots and give vertical stringing. It is probably an accurate and good looking rifle however repeated shots are going to lead to frustration.
I would look for a Parker Hale with a heavier barrel, they are not a particularly fashionable rifle so do not demand particularly high prices, or there was a Tikka M65 for sale on here with a heavy barrel and 'scope for GBP500 which is certainly a 1000 yards rifle. The stock looks scruffy however that is easily dealt with and at that price it is worth a look, in fact I am still thinking about it..
Down side is you cannot PM the seller or view the for sale and wanted section when logged in as you are a new member however if you are interested then I am sure we can get a message to Peter who has it for sale.

I also contacted a friend of a friend and he said the same thing.so was thinking of buying new.
so ive been advised to look for a Remington 700 sps.with a heavy barrel.
or a tikka t3 varmint.so ive been looking online.and found a new tikka at bagnalls in Newcastle.
so I will try to get there this week to view it

Re: newby here
A Rem 700 is always a good start as is a Howa 1500. Shooting to 1000 yards is as much down to your mind as your rifle when you first start out at long distance shooting. I was talking to someone today who said it was not until he looked at the people at the 1200 yard point as he drove away from the butts that he realised just how far it was, put that out of your mind and it is not so different to 1000 yards, it just takes longer for the bullet to get to the other end.

is the tikka not up to the job.max range will be 1000 ,but will mainly be shooting upto 600.
also what scopes and mods would you recommend.baring in mind my maximum budget will be
about £1200. sign92

Re: newby here
There are a lot of Rem700's over here so for every Tikka you will probably see 5 Remington's which means you may have a better choice of rifles. Personally a Tikka with a heavy barrel would always be my first choice and there is a .308 M65 for sale on this forum 'scoped for less than half your budget which is a confirmed 600/1000 yard rifle.
Scope wise the Brian Fox offering at around GBP110 is well worth a look and is in use by shooters in the F Class league. I often see them on the firing point and everyone seems to like them, paying another GBP200-250 more would probably not get you anything better. Next step up is a Sightron and something like a 8-32x56 LRMOA will be just under GBP800 plus rings so the Fox option if buying new is very attractive.
Mods are a very personal choice, Onelesscharlie on this forum builds a wide range which are of super quality and very effective if you want to look at a new model, used expect to pay GBP100-175 however do make sure you are buying one with the correct thread to suit your rifle and that is is not rotting from the inside out.
