Interesting report, but don't count on anything happening. Even though firearms licensing is a State responsibility, the standardisation of laws was overseen by the Federal Govt and they don't back down to the States.
The LNP is a relatively new party (a full merger between the Liberal and National Party*, rather than the standard coalition they usually form) and might trying to flex it's muscles against a Federal Labor Govt who should be given a damn good kicking in the upcoming election. :shakeshout:
Australian politics is usually pretty cut throat (even when they are playing nicely!) but given that the LNP will not be tied to the next Lib/Nat Federal Govt (not that it really matters with the State/Fed relationship), I fully expect the Federal Govt to jump on the LNP from a very great height over this, for no other reason than to stamp their authority over the States.
*Liberal Party - same as the Conservatives here
National Party of Australia - formerly The National Country Party. Think of it as a rural based Conservative Party.
