Shooting Acronyms

I've been on the site a wee while now and I can't get over the number of acronyms used for everything from target shooting to reloading to gunsmithing, and I work in IT!
Is there a resource available to help a newbie out with translating the shooter-speak or maybe a thread I've missed?

Hi Dean, this has the makings of a good thread, a 'simple' example being cartridge designations. Try getting your head around a 30-06 so named because it is a .30 cal introducer in 1906 and the 30-03 was introduced in 1903.

Wikipedia has a fairly generic list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_firearms_terms however it is not truly specific to UK shooting so hopefully we can generate something here as opposed to just linking to other sites. Are there any specific areas you are interested in?

Have you ever asked yourself what happened to IPv5? Yup I know all about ST2+ however it does not make life any easier :lol:

I'll post as I find them, there were a load on one rifle club site explaining the types of shooting they did, took me ages to look them all up I suppose a glossary of terms would be good also, just had to look up scout rifle and gallery rifle to make sure I knew what you guys were talking about

I've been shooting 30+ years and still have to look a lot of stuff up when folk get technical on here, so I wouldn't worry too much.

We do actually have an acronym specialist on the forum...Alpha1...you could ask him about some of the really tricky ones...
