I think the better question would be, what are we going to do prevent the government from doing such things again?

Our national governing bodies are fragmented and mostly broke. We don't have any clout in political terms (i.e. we can't refuse to vote for candidate or party X cos there aren't enough of us to make a difference) and the general public either doesn't care about us or actively wants to kill us off. We don't have any fake charidees on our side and we can't afford professional lobbyists to keep the politicians in check.

Very little, I'd imagine.

Shotguns (...at least traditional ones...) are very well protected - the Old Etonians aren't going to give away the family's Purdey's any time soon.

For firearms, there won't be an outright ban, we'll lose them in little steps, not necessarily in this order:

* Semi-automatic weapons.
* Large magazine capacities.
* Detachable magazines.
* 'Shorter' firearms - it's 60cm now, but there's not much to stop it matching the 40" semi / pump shotgun rule.
* (Ex) military (style) rifles or anything tactical.
* Military calibres.
* Lever release rifles.

...and so on. Just a bit at a time, so that it seems like a reasonable thing to do at the time.

Make the best of what you have now, because one day you won't be able too. Sad times.

johngarnett wrote:I retain a sickening memory of a cell FULL of cardboard boxes in Camborne Police Station containing Cornwalls' handguns and accessories. I was able to leave my confiscation to the last week to enable a practical comp. The officer concerned was a shooter and was sympathetic but I was, and still am, very p***ed about the whole thing.

However, those who 'handed in' were the lucky ones. We were once pistol shooters in the UK. If we remember it, it will not be forgotten.

Same here, it took a whole afternoon to catalogue the pistols and associated kit that I handed in at Camborne Police Station. I was wearing a smart suit and was polite and cooperative, the two officers present were both sympathetic and humbled by the whole experience.

If you want to consider a political campaign, remember that ACPO have a great deal to do with how the laws on firearms get written. Then go have a look at the majority by which your elected Police and Crime Commissioner (who is the boss of your Chief Constable) holds his £70k/yr post. Then look up the number of Certificates on issue in your police area and subtract one from the other and think about the possibilities.

Realistically, we are beaten. The great voting populace think, by and large that there is no legit reason for firearm ownership, and the Muppets dictating will not do anything which might be unpopular. So we are screwed - should have said No when we had a chance....
