On the range yesterday, NRASC @600 centuary

I was with my good mate Nick up at the NRASC yesterday. Signed in and was shooting by 14H15 so 45 minutes after the signal ( we did arrive at 13H45 to be fair ). It wasn't crowded as there was 3 targets laid out for us. Nick and I both stayed on the line for the duration of the shoot as there was nobody waiting to come on so to speak. Again the little "pikey" cal .243 ran very well indeed with the first shot being a v-bull, and second one high into the 5 ring, which I expected. The wind caused a bit of excitement as it changed from left to right at a moments whim to make things interesting. I was within a 3/4moa for elevation and 1 1/2moa windage ( the wind catching me out a little ).

There was the Hotrod Hayride event going on at Bisley over the weekend so it was tent city, which I think is a good money earner for the NRA.

Yes it was a bit like tent city, the sercurity people on the gate wanted to see ID before they would let us on to Bisley as we were not with the Hayride, Bl---y cheek :55:
We were on 300 range target 101 all day, had a great day......

.243 is an excellent calibre. Do the numbers of something like a DTAC (115 grain) and compare to .338 Lap Mag.

I was there as well. First time out with the Howa. At 300 in the morning and 600 in the afternoon for a short while. Consistently in the bull at 300 and then that pesky wind catching me out in the afternoon but elevation consistent so I was well pleased. Happy the rifle is better than I am.

One of the other people I was talking to ( Chris I think his name was ) is off to the Arctic to do a bit of expedition filming. He had his 300 Win Mag @300 in the morning ( Didn't know this at the time ) and was talking to me about my rifle/shooting. I offered him to have a go on my rifle first shot was a little wide in the 5 ring by the wind, second was v-bull third was 5 ring just outside the v. He was then asking me to have a go on his rig..... when he asked me to be honest about it I thought, ok. Well when he produced the 300 win mag I thought mmmmmm big game as that's what I used in SA. We spoke a bit and he said its to protect his crew against........POLAR BEARS . I said the trigger is a bit stiff for range work, but understand its stiff for heavy gloved hands. Also the scope only had cross hairs, no mildots, with small hunting turrets, very good in the veld, but gloved hands mmmmm bigger turrets needed, also when I was out in the veld, I had a laminated bullet trajectory taped to the stock and turret marked according with different colour paint for quick adjustment. No fumbling when the target can KILL YOU wtfwtf.

Just to say it was nice to fire off the 300 again :shakeshout:

Truth is Gary, at the range he is likely to use it the scope turrets aren't going to get used! I suspect with a humping great polar badger galloping across the ice at you that precision aiming will be the least of his concerns tongueout

This reminds me of a warm Saturday morning at the range many years ago.

I was shooting at BR when a couple turned up as guests to try a 30-06 as they were off to Greenland for a trecking holiday and apparently it would be handy if they knew how to shoot a 30-06. Great in principle however two things to consider. neither of them was over 5'4" and they were both of very slight build and the only 30-06 was a nasty PH fitted with a 'scope with the shortest eye relief known to mankind, worse still it belonged to someone who loved to stoke it up to eye watering MV's. I just knew it would end in tears and voiced my concerns however they all knew better and the RCO was happy so I went back to my shooting.

End of the morning we had two rather glum looking newbies, both sporting cuts over the eyes and I doubt they would ever willingly pick up a rifle again, let alone use it in anger so lets just hope any marauding Polar Bears that did show up opted for a snack with more meat on it and left them alone....
