DM: Why not drop this chap a line and see what he says - seems he knows his stuff...though not sure if he does work on slug barrels or not.

My wee CZ HC-Pump action is rifle accurate with it's wee skinny 20" barrel and iron sights out to 50 - haven't been able to try it at longer distances as yet.

Keep us posted on this DM, it sounds interesting.

I was led to believe that there really wasn't much (if any) ballistic benefit of a shotgun barrel longer than 18"?

I'd expect it's got to do with propelling the load relatively slowly in a big area - it's about 20cm3 for an 18" .308 barrel verses nearly 120cm3 for a 12g barrel (very approximately).

That does not bother me, a millimetre is as good as a mile, but I do keep wondering if fitting a heavier and longer barrel might make a world of difference to the potential of this long range lobber of lead.

Any thoughts on how to source build such a thing?

At this time it is just a pipe dream, but who knows where dreams lead to?

How long (or short) is that barrel? As it's a bolt action S1 shot gun it only needs to conform to the 12/24 rule - only pump action and semi auto S1 shotguns need to conform to the OAL of 40" as well.

Any pump or semi shotgun needs to conform to the 24" barrel / 40" OAL rule (whether S1 or S2).

Shotguns (not semi or pump) held on an SGC must have at least a 24" barrel.

So yeah, as far as I know, a bolt action, revolver, single shot or double barrel 'smooth-bore' held on a FAC only need conform to the 12" /24" rule.

Agree with all of the above - except that for ones in 9mm RF (I think) revolver shotguns are S5.
