Surrey Guns

Had a good experience with a gun shop or rifle maker? Found a good deal? Tell us about it. Had a bad experience, TELL THE GUN SHOP!

Forum rules
Posting of negative comments in the Gunshop section could bring unwanted criticism on the forum, having said that it is important to let members know if dealings with a Gunshop were less than ideal for you. To that end we will allow what will be known as the 'Scotsgun Ruling'

The Scotsgun Ruling:

>Add Gun Shop here<

"As I've yet to have a 'positive' experience there, I'll refrain from commenting further."

Beyond that please take it up with the Gunshop, if you do resolve the issue in a agreeable manner let us know!

This rule applies to the entire forum.

Surrey Guns

#1 Post by hitchphil »

a trip there resulted in none of the rifles I was prepared to buy available but all were listed in gun star /trader. the guy behind the counter was really nice but is not a shooter so didn't know anything about any rifles & had no ability to negotiate. they have never responded to email or phone. they missed out on 2 riflepurchases. what a waste of time & petrol. web site is usless too.

Called in there recently, new staff,Peter ,the owner was away shooting ,but the new guy in charge is an F Class shooter and seemed to know his stuff, that said. They never called me back with a cost for a FWB target rifle,so Bedford Target Supplies got my custom.

Bought my Anschutz 1913 match rifle from Surrey Guns in 1988. The owner then was Graham Manley and was the best thing going as far as target shooting was concerned.
The NSRA wanted £960 whilst Graham was asking £765 for the SAME RIFLE!!!!!!!!!!
I was told that he used to fly over to Germany in his own light aircraft and pick the stuff up himself.

I drove down to Wallington with my eldest lad, and after buying the rifle, a new glove, a new “Gunguard” case and paying for petrol (a lot cheaper then) I was still over £90 better off than buying from the clowns at Bisley.

I could never understand why the very people who should have been trying to sell as cheaply as possible to their members, were always (and still are) the most expensive.

No longer run by Graham. Same was true of so many gunsmiths Tucker, Cullam, Fordnam, Clarke, 10ring, etc etc ran at competitive prices in an ever diminishing market. New owner is apparently a shooter too but I haven't been able to reach him after 6m trying. Staff is not a shooter so did not know the difference between a Swing Mk4 & an 1813 unless written on the label.

Most annoying thing is not updating listings (pls take note gunshops!) its a customers market there is 2nd hand kit all over the place, if you advertise something & its no longer available then that wont buy goodwill when people travel 2+hrs on a day off to come see it. Goodwill lubricates many firearms trades, .......... as does negotiating.

There were 2 rifles there that I would have bought together, cash, for the club & at the right price..... 150gbp for an old Match 54 without sights, case, hand-stop, bipod etc isn't the right price :bad:

NSRA need all the cash they can get, they cant improve margins by volumes as they do nothing for shooting outside Bisley & the national teams (that they do a great deal for) so the county clubs are diminishing & the grass roost is failing so sales to regions, clubs are low. So they charge what bank of mum n dad will fund when squad member marches them in & says one of those please. Then Guildford CC take a huge slice as business rates to prop up their bankrupt public sector pension pot.

......Sorry had a bit of a cynical moment there....... . :run:

I won't comment on the Parker Hale that one club I'm a member of put in to Surrey Guns for rebarrelling - complete with new barrel - several months ago, beyond saying that it is still apparently there.

Having just seen the forum rules I can quite positively say without a single shadow of doubt that:

"As I've yet to have a 'positive' experience there, I'll refrain from commenting further."

Doe's anyone know what happening with Surrey Guns lately? I went there last Fri (17 Jan, 14) and it was shut with a note on the door saying "shut today, back tomorrow" or words to that effect. I rang them today (20 Jan) and the number wasn't recognized so went to the shop anyway and its still shut. Their website is up and running and they have guns still being advertised on Gunstar!

Any ideas ?
