Section 1 shotgun in Scotland ?

#1 Post by sconie »

Hi all apologies if this has been asked before, I have held my shotgun and firearm ticket for fifteen years but only used it for my work until recently. I have joined a local full bore club and hope to stick in a variation soon, my question is that I would like to buy a pump or semi auto shotgun and the section 1 versions a lot of posters on here own are used for tactical shooting comps, therfor giving good cause to own one, however ranges of all types are a bit sparse up here and I have been unable to find any practical shotgun clubs nearby to join.

Can anyone give me advise on how I can get involved up here, or am stuck with section 2 only ?

Cheers

First you need to address your terminology if you are to have any hope of getting a S1 shotgun.

There are no clubs in the UK that shoot "Tactical" shooting competitions with shotguns.

What you do have the option of shooting in the UK is practical/target shotgun.

Recent changes to the home office guidance offer you some hope of getting your shotgun, The NRA is the national governing body of "Target Shotgun" & this is considered a good reason to posses a S1 shotgun, so individual membership of the NRA or membership of an affiliated club is all you need, (most UK clubs are NRA affiliated) if the new club you have just joined is affiliated to NRA then under the latest guidance you should be fine.

Do not except any conditions that demand UKPSA membership or other such nonsense, there are now other options & routes into the sport.

four4islands manages a series of shotgun matches at various ranges around the country that they use to create a national league, these events are open matches & do not require UKPSA affiliation & deliver a national champion at the end of each year, they also have a multi-gun match series that may interest you.

Your biggest challenge will be distance to the events as fou4islands do not currently have a supporting club in Scotland, although they would like one if anyone knows of one.

Any problems try & contact James Harris the NRA Target Shotgun Rep.

Good luck

Dundee RPC have some members who shoot Practical Shotgun on their outdoor range at Forfar. I've only met a few of them, but they are A-1 people.

Thanks folks, sorry for the incorrect terminology, I must admit that it seems a minefield when your starting out, I do have in laws near Dundee so I'm through that way fairly often.

WHERE in Scotland are YOU??

New gallery range opened on the first of this month not too far from Rosyth - and is rated for S.1 solid slug

MAY be expanding to use adjoining land to set up a semi permanent PSG layout too

I am just south of Glasgow, and the west coast seems to be about the worst in Scotland for full bore ranges and practical shotgun ranges.

There are regular Lv1 shoots (which anyone can attend) at Crocketford near Dumfries and Carlisle Small Arms Club, which will be the closest current ranges to you by a country mile (or 300 :bad: ). Only the UKPSA host matches North of Manchester which limits us Northerners choice somewhat

Just checked the calender and frustratingly the last scheduled match at Crocketford this year is this weekend but thats a Lvl3 comp which you need a competition license to shoot. There have been 7/8 matches shot there this year so far.

Next Lv1 at Carlisle is a 2 gun shoot (shotgun and gallery/mini rifle or LBR/LBP) on 6th October. Then 17th November for just PSG and then another 2 gun on 15th December, which is a Christmas shoot and we all get a present afterwards, aawwww

Carlisle Small Arms Club have their own website which includes directions and a map. If you put 'Newby East, Cumbria' into an online mapping service it'll get you 99% there to give you an idea of traveling distance/time.

I go to most shoots at both locations (but don't let that out you off), so if you're interested in attending and have any questions feel free to ask :good:
