GB Gallery Rifle tour to Germany

The Great Britain Gallery Rifle Team will be competing in the third leg of the IGRF international next weekend in Leitmar, Germany.

Teams from Germany, Great Britain and Ireland will compete in both Centrefire and Smallbore shooting. The event of choice for these matches is the internationally recognised 1500 match.

I did not even know we had a gallery rifle team. I wish them every success any way.

We do - you can compete for GB in the discipline. For international affairs the 1500 match is the event of choice and is overseen by the International Gallery Rifle Federation - the IGRF. If you are not familiar with the 1500 check out the course of fire in the Gallery Rifle handbook

The GB team is officially recognised and somewhat funded under the auspices of the NRA. We are is currently looking for a new captain for the 2014 season where tours of Ireland and Germany are already calendared. There is high probability of a tour to South Africa around the October/November time of the year. The GB leg of the IGRF tour takes place at Bisley at the Phoenix Meeting.

As far as Gallery Rifle is concerned you can also shoot for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These teams are looked after by appropriate governing bodies of the respective countries. The Home Countries National Matches as they are known compete in the shorts matches of T&P1 and Multi-Target.

For some reason, few if any shooters in the North East shoot this discipline.
As an ex-pat southerner living in the North East I am quite frustrated with this as there are some very good shooters up here who would do well in the 1500.
I do recall shooting 1000 to 1500 rounds per week when I used to compete in this and other similar events (in the Pistol days) before I moved up here and that is very expensive and is probably beyond the means of a lot of people up here.

There is a hope amongst some of the guys up in Scotland to start shooting 1500's up here mainly to some get practise in before heading down to Bisley.

Good luck with that. The rewards in terms of satisfaction when you start attaining consistently high scores are excellent.

I think one of the main issues inhibiting people taking up the discipline is that they don't see it being shot so don't see what fun it could be.

Club level demonstration sessions would be a big help in promoting this type of shooting.

I would love to see these disciplines being shot at our club but we need some people to show the shooters what it is about.

Yeah i've only seen it shot at Bisley so far and some of the usual suspects who go are keen to get it started up here.50m ranges are a bit thin on the ground but i think we're hoping to get started for next season.

Gallery Rifle shooting is essentially Pistol Shooting by proxy. Most if not all of the same competitions are shot and in many cases the same ranges are used. I think this makes the discipline highly accessible - its the reason I, amongst many others, took up Pistol shooting in the 1980s

What barriers are there to stop people taking part in GR disciplines in their clubs? The 1500 is a fairly complex course of fire but what about T&P1, Multi target or even some precision events? These are all shot in both centrefire and smallbore.

Further to that what stops people shooting competitions? We run 4 events at Bisley through the year and half a dozen or more throughout the country. These are all Open meetings - anyone can come. The calendar of events is always on the website.
