Do I detect a resurgence of interest in GR??? Great!! Anyone thinking of trying - do it!

I've run comps using a whistle to give the timed 'appearances', so no need for sophisticated range equiptment.

Guys, just go for it. It's fun and that's what shooting should be!

I agree it is great fun and very challenging, but us old farts who used to shoot it with revolvers are not likely to want to have a go.
The sport needs more young people in it and for them to be made aware of the pleasure to had from the discipline.
NRA where are you??? An opportunity for you to do something useful that will only do you some good in turn.
Purveyor of fine cast boolits.
All round good guy and VERY grumpy old man.

Um I thought that's why this thread was started by Neil (as he is the NRA discipline rep)

With respect, the Northeast rep is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard - his only interest is Target Rifle and I have yet to see him around any of the clubs I shoot in up here.
Trying to get this off of the ground would need to be a centrally organised effort. Just remember the HUGE popularity of Gallery pistol events ( PP1 and 2, SPA and B, 1500); all of these brought in large entries and good money for the NRA.

I agree, the sport needs young'uns, but there's no need for us old farts to 'give up' just yet!!!

You, of all people, must have some 38spl stuff around!!!!!

Good shooting to you all

GR really needs to capture the younger generation. You only have to look up and down the line at Melville to see that the majority of GR shooters are at least middle aged!

GR needs to "capture" some of the newer disciplines such as Mini Rifle. Dividing shooting further by having another seperate governing body is the wrong way to go. GR should encompass all events shot at 100 yds and under with a variety of SB and CF rifles, pistols and revolvers. The lure of the "black rifle" will be strong for young people coming into the sport who want to shoot what they shoot on their XBox.

There are challenges for GR as there are for all aspects of Target Shooting.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!

Hmm - it is worrying that the perception that shooting at Bisley is only for the top shooters. Its one that needs to be addressed by the GR community in conjunction with the NRA I'd say.

We are looking at pricing options and some flexibility for the GRAW events at Bisley for the 2014 season. It is appreciated that cost of entry (as well as everything else, travel, accommodation, ammunition etc) is a barrier for some people. Regional shoots (Basildon, Derby, Frome etc) do tend to be cheaper to enter and offer a subset of the popular GR events. These are always advertised on the Galleryrifle website and the 2014 calendar is now being compiled.

There is no magic want though - the competitions must cover their costs so we'll be running some models looking at how things can be run more efficiently and maybe optimising some range options and appropriate timings.

Following the apparent success of the recent CSR training day its highly probably that a Gallery Rifle training day will be organised. More news when it comes.

For you old revolver guys - gave you tried LBR/LBP shooting? Not the same I know but its the nearest we are going to get. Its just as challenging and we need more people competing with these gun types.

The 1500 is a challenging course of fire and we use this competition for International events. Doesn't been its anything spacial in any regard tough and we have 5 classification levels in the 1500 to encourage people in. Its worth a go and if a 50M range isn't immediately accessible the 1020 is the 1500 sans the 50m stages. Practice your timings against this. The Irish are the only people I currently know who offer the 1020 at a classified meeting so far however.

As far as pulling the youngsters in - nobody would disagree but this isn't specifically an NRA issue. All shooting (any sport) needs local clubs and people in those clubs to promote the sport locally. So what specifically (Dodgyrog) would you need from the NRA to get young people involved Bear in mind they will be shooting at your club if they live in your area so how do we do it?

I have my own theories why the likes of Gallery Rifle shooting is not particularly rich in young blood. Ultimately we all have to look at what we are doing at a club and individual level to address this.

Neil i think most are aware there is no magic wand and quite what we do about it i don't know, never was much of an ideas man.As for new members into clubs it can be done, one of the clubs i'm in with mike357 has several probationers at the mo with a waiting list. The increase within this club at least seemed to come from a website letting those who maybe interested what's out there.
