Veteran's day November 11th

#1 Post by rufrdr »

Veteran's day or armistice day as it was known here in the U.S. is celebrated today. It is a Federal holiday for many but mostly as a day to sleep in and not go to work. My family have been citizen-soldiers since the Civil war, none of us were professional soldiers but all answered the call when required. We served in the Civil war, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, the cold war, Iraq.

My church had a nice recognition of veterans yesterday, during the service all veterans were called to the front of the church for recognition. My daughter was attending with my wife and I so both of us were able to go and stand before the congregation. It was interesting to see the age range from 80s to 20s. Only one other woman besides my daughter.

I thought this video is pretty good. My wife had tears running down her cheeks from it as she watched it. Even though she maintained a brave front when our son was in Iraq I have learned since then that she suffered greatly while he was gone and because of it, she is resisting our youngest son's desire to join and do his hitch with the Army.

To all of the veterans on this board and their families who served and those who waited for them to come home, I salute you usflag.gif :australia2: :flag13:

I along with eight other ex servicemen from our village went to The Peat Spade Inn Longstock to a Lunch for about forty elderly ex service people, hosted by local Business people. A wreath was laid on the War Memorial directly outside the pub. We then sat down to a splendid three course lunch and free bar. Our party of eight were the last to leave, not sure of the time but it was dark ;)

Good post rfrdr. I was in the US last veterans Day, nice to see Vets being treated decently by so many places and people.

I just hope they don't over commercialise it. In a way it was sad that such an occasion was being used to flog used cars, furniture and such like. By all means have a holiday, stay in bed etc but big biz is danger close to hijacking this, just as they did Christmas and obscuring the true meaning of it all.

The UK should follow this example by making Armistice Day a bank holiday (if it falls on a weekend; tough titty!).

...in exchange for that socialist-inspired 'May Day' one.

True though; most people just see it as an excuse not to go to work.
