I recently fired a semi auto WMR .22 and it was great fun. Feeling a lot closer to a full bore semi and with a round with a bit of power it was knocking the fig 11 targets down. Really enjoyed using it, a rather over looked semi in this country but for obvious reasons as I believe ammo is a bit more than .22lrsnayperskaya wrote:I stand corrected, my mistake :)polemass wrote:there is plenty semi autos in .22WMR on the market,also-asked one RFD about it,answer was yes-can be done(maybe for now, because you never know how HO will react...sadly times when "if it is not illegal is ok" passed away...)

Here are some pictures of the Highland Arms .22LR rifle. The .22 insert for the magazine is milled from aluminium. The bolt is internal and the charging handle doesn't reciprocate with each shot but the cases are ejected through the slot on the top - perhaps this might help with reliability.

Good spot! Hadn't looked at their website in a while and guess they reduced the price. I may well get one in the next few months but keep us updated on your progress. It's an interesting rifle and something a bit different so as long as it functions ok I'd be happy.

I think we can now say that the old once Sec 5 always sec5 rule is dead....first we had SP L1A1's then SP M1 carbines, then rusMilitary .22 lr AK47's (using original receivers) now VZ58's permanently fitted with .22 kits......the list keeps growing chaps!Swifty Boy wrote:There are some .22 rimfire VZ58s in the UK marketed as 'Highland Arms' by William Evans at Bisley. These appear to be a Zahal conversion kit permanently fixed in place in an ex-issue CZ58 rifle.
Mags are 25 rounder inserts fitted in the original 30 round magazine body. 600 quid which isn't too bad - I went to have a look at them and they are built like a tank. Might get one later in the year...search on guntrader for them.
These do sound very interesting, tell me, do these have permanently fitted .22 inserts (questionable under sec5 and really pushing it because of the original barrel still being present) or are new .22 barrels installed?

The VZ61 scorpion is an attractive idea, very cute little thing. In practice, unless you use it as a prop for a gangsta / terrorist fancy dress party, I think it 100% sux .
It works well full auto but as a semi-auto it is neither an acceptable hand-gun nor a decent shoulder held weapon. When shouldered it feels like something I would have nicked from my 8 yr old son and unless you are built like a hobbit you hover so much over the sights that by the time you get an acceptable sights-picture the target has actually disapeared or had time to engage you first.
I dont think I'd buy one in 22Lr

The .22 AKMs (not Ak-47s) from Izhmash that Rusmilitary sells were never a Section5 as they are factory built as a .22 semi and not conversions. Its the same with the 7.62 Romanian AKM variants they sell, they are actually made as a straight pull at the factory not select fire variants converted.I believe the once a Section 5 always a Section 5 rule is still in force, but not sure how they get round it with the SVT-40s that are around.huntervixen wrote:I think we can now say that the old once Sec 5 always sec5 rule is dead....first we had SP L1A1's then SP M1 carbines, then rusMilitary .22 lr AK47's (using original receivers) now VZ58's permanently fitted with .22 kits......the list keeps growing chaps!Swifty Boy wrote:There are some .22 rimfire VZ58s in the UK marketed as 'Highland Arms' by William Evans at Bisley. Ah, I stand corrected, must be my memory, but I dimly recall an excellent review on here re the .22 AK that said it had a 1950's dated receiver??snayperskaya wrote:The .22 AKMs (not Ak-47s) from Izhmash that Rusmilitary sells were never a Section5 as they are factory built as a .22 semi and not conversions. Forgot about the SVT-40, chalk another one up!
I think the line in the sand re Sec5 former military SP's being regarded Sec1, is a new unported barrel being fitted, plus obvious deletion of pistons etc.
Thats why I think the .22 Vz58 could be on dodgy Sec5 ground if it still has the original barrel fitted (even in heavily modified, converted form)
Re: csa vz58 .22 no more...
I'm not sure about the once a Section 5 always a Section 5 rule any more. The updated guidelines (last time I checked) explicitly stated once a S5 always a S5, yet we have so many conversions, the SLRs, M1 Carbines, and seemingly SKS and SVT-40s
Re: csa vz58 .22 no more...
Good point Dave....missed the SKS!
So we have: L1A1, M1 Carbine, SVT-40, SKS, Vz58's (all using original Military receivers) anymore in the works chaps?
They get round the Sec5 rule Dave by using the fact that there is no such thing as a Sec 5 component, once a Sec5 rifle is stripped to component parts it is merely a collection of Sec 1 components and uncontrolled parts....So you can build up a rifle (from these components) with a new unported barrel, plus necessary semi auto deactivation modifications to receivers etc and you then have a Sec1 firearm.
Its a workaround, but it does comply with the law, so its legal!
