Thanks for the update and the comp report mate, very interesting! I'm on the look out for a Anschutz 54 for use at my indoor club and might even bring it out into the Sun on occasion. Not to sure about putting Mini Mag down it though.

You can't go wrong with a '54' or any of the other Anschutz target rifles (I'm a bit biased ) - but don't rule out a BSA martini action if one turns up, as they're very good too for both 25m TR and long range...

...Mini Mag only has a 'wash' of copper on them, but I still don't put them down my Anschutz.

If you get one soon, don't forget to bring it to the fun shoot...if not you can have a long range plink with mine if you like...

When I've got my M&P 15-22 PC and I'm next at 300 on century I'm going to see what I can do.

Be careful...once you realise a .22 can hit the bull at that range it can become addictive tongueout

I once plinked a old brno .22 bolt action at 16 inch steel gongs - distances 500 meters

4 major lessons

1. BUY good ammo - I mean good ammo - the velocity variation was very apparent.

2. Have a longs barrel you need velocity

3. Aim about 20 foot above gong

4. It is freaking additive and fun pinging steel!

A long barrel will do absolutely nothing for velocity other than lower it slightly.

I'm by no means an expert, but wouldn't a longer barrel contain the expanding gases for longer, allowing them to push on the bullet for longer, increasing velocity?
I fully expect to be wrong though :-)

No . max velocity is reached within appx 14" , the only reason for long barrels on a TR is to achieve a longer sight base , re aperture sights , to maximise on accuracy , you can even find barrel extensions to increase the sight base even further . In fact velocity is reduced due to increased friction on the bullet of long barrels .

There's bound to be differences in the point of max velocity for various ammo , I have always liked the look of bull barrels but never wanted to chop a perfectly good rifle though .

I have always preferred a BSA Martini action myself , this one I think is the dogs dodas , done by a friend of mine its lovely to handle , scroll to bottom of page .

Sorry, should have explained more.
The original Anschutz 2013 was actually produced with a 16" barrel and the sight radius made up with a tube, but it soon became apparent that a normal length barrel with a tube added was more to the liking of most shooters (those who wanted to add a tube that is)
As such the 2013 was soon produced with a 1913 barrel, which became the norm.
Still have my old 1913 rifle that I bought in 1988 and at my age I can't see the need for a bloody gert gas-pipe stuck onto the end of the rifle.
A couple of the lads at the club have them and all they seem to do is bang them against the firing point when they put them into their shoulder.
Made for quite some entertainment when one of the fore-sights fell off during a match card a few weeks ago.
