It's just natural human inquisitiveness. Do you lot never thing "I wonder if this will do this if I do this to it?" Or something to that effect?
If he kills or injures himself it's natural selection at work, if not he could stumble onto something incredible!
Who knows, he could discover an easy route to fusion, or even fission using his his simple back-yard-bubba set up
