Hi HALODIN,

Yes, I got my FAC last month but am undecided what to fill the .22 slot with, hence the questions.

It's a good feeling when it finally arrives, I had a whacking great big smile on my face!

Thankfully there's lots of choice in .22 and it's pretty well priced. What are you considering?

Possibly a 10/22 of some variant... but really undecided at the moment.

I'm in the process of joining a second club which does more .22 shooting, so I'll also get a look at what they are using and should have an opportunity to try a few different things. I'm also holidaying in a month or so close to SYSS, so a visit there is certainly in order (assuming the Estate Manager can be convinced).

10/22 is a workhorse and good value to boot. Don't be scared to put a high mag scope on it if you're after pin point accuracy and you plan to shoot from a rest.

What other slots have you got to fill?

Just the one other slot for a .308. CZ550 VL on order.

be aware that some 10/22s wont cycle particulary well with subsonic ammo ...

I've never owned a CZ, but I hear nothing but praise for them. A Ruger 10/22 is probably about right for you if you only have 1 x .22 slot, it's a good dual purpose (target, semi-auto) rifle.

I can't remember who did the tests years ago, it may have been the American magazine Guns & Ammo, but their results showed that for the majority of standard velocity ammunition, 14" was the optimum length. All powder burnet whilst the bullet is still in the barrel with no effect of deceleration from drop in pressure or friction....

The reason most US barrels are not this length? 16" is their legal minimum. My Adams & Bennet barrel fitted to my Volquartson I had cut to 14" and it gives outstanding performance, but I have nothing to compare that to as the barrel was ordered so cut. But, I have seen Anchutz and Weirauch bolt guns on my dealers shelf, with factory cut 14" barrels...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Can't you just swap out the spring for a shorter one or clip a bit off?

my experience is that some (not all) 10/22s need the extra oomph from a supersonic round ...
