Another scope question

#1 Post by Dougan »

I think these are straightforward questions...?

If 1 click is 1/8" at 100 yards, then it's 1/4" at 200, 3/8" at 300, 1/2" at 400 and 5/8" at 500 yards...yeah?

And, if 1 click is 1/8" at 100 yards, how many clicks to a minute?

Thanks OP...I tried working it out by estimating a minute from a score card, and got 7.7 ( ) - I'm glad it's that straightforward as the scope I just got has 4 clicks per increment...so should be able to think in minutes...

4 clicks would suggest the 'scope if graduated in 0.25 minute increments.

It's a 'Fox' scope (and an amazing bit of kit for the money too) - It says on the turret, '1/8" at 100 yards' so should be 0.125 - There's 15 increments, each 4 clicks, making it 60 clicks per full turn...

...I was relieved by your simple answer of '8', as that's going to make things fairly simple...

...but your other answer of '1.047" per minute' was what I really needed to know - I've been using a 25m zero card to get a 100 and 200 yard zero, and was a bit skeptical that the card was accurate (plus other variables, like height of scope at short range and ammo etc) - I was coming up just short, but now I've had my maths corrected it looks like both the card is accurate, and the scope adjustment is too.

This is for my .22, so I will need to make some adjustments up to 29 minutes - using 8 clicks per minute would still only put it out by 7" at the max distance of 500 Yards, so I'll need to chuck a handful of clicks on to the bigger changes...but once on, 8 clicks a minute will do nicely :good:

Hmm... I am confused now by the four clicks per increment.

Hello Mr Dougan,

I thought this was a trick question to start with, because 1 minute (minute of angle (moa)) is 1 inch @ 100 yards. So... 8 * 1/8" = 1". Was this how you understood it?

Cheers,

Craig.

Hmm, but a high quality mechanical calibre* does 28,400 beats ** to the minute, which is Swiss watches (and rifles, perhaps) are so accurate.

* watch movement in this instance, oomans
** ticks (or maybe tocks)

Hello Mr HALODIN,

As I've found out, a minute is a tiny bit over an inch at 100 yards...so not quite spot on, but close enough.

So not a trick question, but as someone who's always used minutes, I've been over complicating the transition to inches...

Now, am I being thick (?), but I always thought that minutes were a measurement of angle...so is it just a happy coincidence that 1 minute is very close to 1 inch...?

It's the relationship to the 100 yards that gives it away, squirrel. Sines, tangents and cosines. An inch subtends an angle of almost a minute at 100 yards.
