Yet another desert trip

The shooting gang went to the desert last weekend to scout for a long range shooting venue on some BLM land near Barstow. Hope you enjoy the photos!

The actual shooting will commence in May.

To get a scale on this picture, that hole is a horizontal mine shaft about 6 ft high and several hundred feet (at least) from the bottom of the wash

So what are the rules on shooting on land in the US? Can you shoot anywhere there's space on public/government land?

So what are the rules on shooting on land in the US? Can you shoot anywhere there's space on public/government land?

No, it depends on what the land has been reserved for. Also, the federal land (mostly in the west) that is close to metro areas is high restricted but lands that are more remote are frequently open for shooting under some safety restrictions. The federal land that we were on has specific shoot/no shoot areas and it is up to the user to know the difference. They are not marked on the ground and a map is needed to know if you are in a shooting allowed zone. Where we were is heavily involved in mining and we came across several recently staked mining claims.

Usually state owned land is not open to target shooting; hunting is permitted but not setting up targets and shooting away. Some states have state owned shooting ranges available on their public land. Pennsylvania and Michigan are two that I lived in that had free access state owned shooting ranges.

Temperature was in the low 80s at most and then cooled off rapidly when the sun went down. It was a perfect day. It's in the low 100s now.
