hello, I had an invite to a guest day at my local club, having only shot air rifles and pistols before getting to try rimfire and shotguns was great. enjoyed the bench rest rimfire and they also stage outdoor target shooting with rimfire rifles as well. now the silly question should I get offered membership would I need 2 rifles or is there an all rounder that could be used for both.

You can do both disciplines with the same rifle as long as the course of fire suits the one gun; some types of shooting call for extended magazines &/or are held against the clock.

In theory a .22 bolt action single shot target rifle will do ALL you could ever want....but start adding timed shoots and the like and that theory is dead in the water.

I know that some .22 benchrest is outdoors too.

May be worth finding out what the outdoor club shooting entails before deciding...

You really need to shoot more, get experience of different disciplines and guns so that you will answer your own questions.

Target shooting and bench rest a re both specific disciplines and usually need rifles suited to the needs of that type of shooting. At the end of the day it all comes round to how competitive you want to be.

I take it this is Cheshunt RPC next to the football club?
If so you are in good hands,its a great club with top end shooters.

I am at the very start only got my application form in the post today! but it was just one of those questions I thought of on the way home and its been bugging me since sunday! tried the fast fire timed range loading at speed against the clock I think I am a bit to laid back for that!!!

Please could I ask why it is best to buy second hand when a newbie like myself wouldn't necessarily know what to watch out for in a second hand firearm?

I'm biased (as are all shooters to their own rifles), but I've have an Anschutz 54 nearly 30 years - I've shot everything from 10-bull at 25 yards with it to 300 yard long range; and it still shoots as sweetly as it ever did...

...most old Anschutz or BSA bolt action rifles would do you for both TR and Benchrest for a good while; then if you become particularly competitive you could look at a more specialised rifle...and the good news is that you can pick a decent one up for around £300...
