FAC moderator question
Is there any reason to have a moderator for target shooting?
Do any ranges require you to have them on certain calibres of firearms?

Yep
The normal good reason is assist in noise reduction on Health and Safety grounds. Certainly araound my way it works, some forces aren't so keen.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools!!

Re: FAC moderator question
Not been to a range that requires you to use one but plenty people have them who only target shoot for their hearing protection. 'elf & Safety and all that

Re: FAC moderator question
Thought it would be health and safety based.
Does using a moderator have any detrimental effect to accuracy / bullet velocity / felt recoil?

Re: FAC moderator question
We use them on health & safety grounds, it does alter the bullet impact but once zero'd with a mod on no problems,it also reduces my .308 recoil greatly I use mods on .22, .223 & .308

Does using a moderator have any detrimental effect to accuracy not if the mod has been fitted properly/ bullet velocity no, only guns that have drilled barrels for the moderator experiance a loss of velocity (the only gun i can think of which has one is an H&K MP5 SD series, which you're not going to be owning any time soon!/ felt recoil? they reduce recoil, quite a bit depending on the calibre

Re: FAC moderator question
As above GMP issue the slot for health and safety. Lancashire have only just started doing so.

This is going to come back and bite us in the ass.
For range shooting:
Shooting is NOISY. Get over it.
It is the quietest when behind the rifle, so really the one who needs the.moderator is not you but the people shooting next to you.
Unless everyone on the point is using a moderator then those with their delicate hearing should wait until the big guns have gone home. Or double plug.
We will quickly get to the stage where we see conditions on FAC to the gist of "these firearms and moderators may only be used on ranges where every other firearm being used is also moderated"
Don't have one just because it looks good , that is the way of the Walt and the way to more stringent conditions.
On the other hand , if you are hunting, it is a good idea for many reasons, the very last ones being h&s and looks cool.

Re: FAC moderator question
I am very wary of the introduction of the use of moderators on target shooting ranges from an Health and safety point of view.
As a shooter of classic rifles there is no way I would be fitting those things to my rifles!
There is perfectly good hearing protection out their so no need for hearing damage, hearing protection is mandatory anyway on ranges. Also any move in this direction would be a negative shift in responsibility that this litigious society is championing.
You should expect loud bangs on shooting ranges, protecting your hearing from that should be your responsibility not that of the person shooting.

This is going to come back and bite us in the ass. HOW'S THAT THEN?
For range shooting:
Shooting is NOISY. Get over it. AYE...100% CORRECT...ALL SHOOTING HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE NOISY
It is the quietest when behind the rifle, so really the one who needs the.moderator is not you but the people shooting next to you. NO.
IN THE CASE OF ONE RANGE I SHOOT AT, A COMPLAINT FROM A NEWLY LOCAL RESIDENT TO THE RANGE MEANS THAT ALL SHOOTING MUST BE DONE WITH MODERATED RIFLES; ANY OTHER RIFLES CAN ONLY BE FIRED FROM WITHIN FOAM LINED WATER BUTTS
Unless everyone on the point is using a moderator then those with their delicate hearing should wait until the big guns have gone home. Or double plug.
ER, RIGHT...
