10/22 fail to fire

I've just picked up a fairly new 10/22 (one of the rimfire magic action ones) and have been using it with a couple of different types of ammo with great success.

Today I've been shooting some cci subs, and nearly every shot is a fail to fire. I cock the rife and pull the trigger again and it works great.


This is a new pack of ammo and was cycling / firing the same ammo (different pack) yesterday.


Hopefully if you look closely you'll see two firing pin marks, one very much lighter than the last.

What's causing this? Is it just the ammo and the inaccuracies in it's manufacture or do i need to swap out the firing pin?

Clean it? Last few times I have played with a 10/22 they get s***-up quickly and the firing pin struggles to make it forward.

My experience of CCI (Standard) is that it can be quite waxy, so much so that it can sometimes be hard to load into my single shot BSA. It just doesn't want to go into the chamber cleanly without a bit of a push.

I've also had similar fail to fires to yours in my AR Ciener kit when the magazine is dirty.

I've had it all apart and cleaned it very thoroughly, but I've not tried the mags.. Will give that a shot.

I've not found the cci's too waxy, no where near as bad as the Winchesters.

Don't have any issues with mini mags or their 'ar' ammo.

I like mini-mag in the 10/22 - I've experimented with match ammo; which does give less recoil and slightly better groups, but most wax the action and mags up fairly quickly - I haven't cleaned my Ruger since a month before the Spring Action Weekend, so it's had over 2000 rounds through it without any hint of a problem...

...I might give it a clean now the Phoenix is over.

Have a look at your recoil spring. A worn spring may not be driving the bolt hard enough to fully seat the cartridge so the firing pin is hitting a rim that moves and hence takes all the energy out of the strike.

Check the ammo in a known good gun (bolt action). I once came across a large quantity of Eley Standard that had no priming compound. Played merry hell until we figured out what had happened!

I'll try that, it does seen a bit weird that it worked ok with ammo of the same make before!
