Removing the breach block on a muzzle loader.

#1 Post by bigfathairybiker »

Has anyone done this?
Is it easy to undo and redo up correctly?
Is it worth doing to get the breach end of the barrel that bit cleaner?
Does it need to be removed to slug the barrel?

The Investarms Model 120 ( hawken type thing ) I've recently got doesn't seem that old.
So hopefully the breach block thread aint seized.

Unless you have the proper fitting tools and equipment then I wouldn't even think of trying it.

They are usually on tight and for good reason.

A good fitting flush topped brush and hot water with a little soap in it is all you need to get it clean.

No it does not need to be removed to slug the barrel.

Okey dokey... :)

I'll not be doing that then...

I'll be ordering a flush topped brush.

Thanks,

I would echo Dromia's comments, it is not the sort of job to be undertaken without the correct tools. I have a barrel vice permanently bolted down and lead wrap the barrel to prevent it slipping. I use a second hand vice around the block again lead packed to prevent marring and even then they can be a swine to remove.

I have a circa 1850 top quality patched ball park rifle. The breech block is only slightly more than finger tight---you need a tool to turn it the last ten degrees or so. It does not leak at all on firing and was obviously intended to be removeable. Having said that, if it was military or modern, I wouldn't even try to remove the block.
