Powder flask or Pre measured tube.

#1 Post by bigfathairybiker »

Has anyone witnessed or know of instances where the powder being poured down a barrel has ignited?
If so, what about igniting the powder in the flask?

I mention this because my club dont allow use of flask with rifles but do with pistols.

As I understand it, the reasoning is that with a rifle a) at the bottom of a long barrel the low concentration of Oxygen means a slow smoulder of an ember is more likely and b ) you are loading a chamber that has just been fired every time so there's more chance of an ember still being present to ignite the new powder.

Many don't allow flasks regardless of rifle or pistol.

No I've not witnessed it.

I don't know of an instance with a normal powder flask but I certainly know of case where a priming flask ignited when priming a flintlock, it cost the chap several fingers. Our club has now moved to loading pistols from vials rather than flasks, if I remember correctly MLAGB rules no longer permit loading directly from a flask.

After doing more research, ( Google! :) ) It appears that flask explosions were quite common many years ago and still happen now. Although a lot less with the spring closing thingy on the flask.

I do use the flask now to measure powder into little plastic vials.
And by doing this I have noticed how inconsistent it can be.
Or maybe I just need practice.

I made up paper cartridges for my BP kit...it's how the ammo was issued back in the day.
Easy to do using cigarette papers..maybe worth a Google

I just posted a reply to the one about making paper Enfield cartridges and said I did it different but didn't want to say I'd used Fag papers in case people thought I was daft.
I had several stuck together and twisted both ends and jammed one twist up the side as I introduced it, thend when rammed home the paper (usually) split. It was also easy to just pull the end off with your teeth and pour it in but I always stuffed the paper in anyway.
Seemed to work ok, just got a 2 band enfield again after 15 yrs so start to get mucky, greasy and smelly again .
