Oleg at Rusmilitary has get them in stock, the Romanian version is £699 and the bits to Sovietize it are pretty easy to get hold of.I don't think there's many about as most people buy Saigas'.

I think it's £825 for the Soviet version, ready made.

It mentions 'dark red' wood; is that the same as above?

What are the stampings like?

The stock and handguards on mine in the pic are a bit lighter than dark red, but Soviet laminate can go anywhere from quite a light honey colour to very dark red.It always tends to look redder than it is in photos. The stampings and riveting are good and the overall finish is good, and unlike the Saiga these have a standard milspec feed ramp in them so will take milsurp mags from the word go.It shot nicely straight out of the box with no zeroing required, infact the first target I shot with it is on rusmilitarys website.I've had two of these Romanian AKs' now and wouldn't hesitate on getting another, once all the bits are on they are as close as you can get to a Soviet AKM over here.

Thanks. I think I'll give him a bell today and go there tomorrow. He states between 7am and 9am only on Saturdays for face-to-face sales - an odd window for sure...

Theres a Saiga on guntrader for £750 with Soviet laminated stock and handguards etc, looks early AK-74ish.Its a private sale so you may be able to haggle on it.

Is the 'dark red' wood (matt finish) the same wood as the Soviet version (albeit unvarnished)?

Hard to say without seeing it, as I said there is quite a variation in Soviet wood colour. The pistol grip in the pic below is what I would call dark red and is spot on for a Soviet AKM.It might be worth Googling "Soviet AKM" images and have a look a the different colour variations. One thing I will say is if you got a Soviet upgrade AKM from Oleg the wood furniture would be matched and genuine Soviet.
